All teacher leaders have a set of skills and dispositions that they feel are important to do their job. The expertise and dispositions that one teacher has may not be the same as another colleague. Similarly, teachers may have differences of opinions on which ones are the most important. The bottom line, teacher leaders, possess a set of skills and dispositions that enable them to do their job and make a difference in the classroom and the school. When I think of my teacher leader skills and dispositions, my skills in order are collaboration skills, planning skills, facilitation skills, and evaluation skills along with my dispositions that are optimism and enthusiasm, commitment to student learning, confidence, and willingness to take risks.

Many would argue that the most critical skill for a teacher leader is the ability to facilitate dialogue amongst teachers (Danielson, 2006). In my opinion, a facilitator possesses good listening skills, is open minded, and is open to feedback. I feel my facilitation skills are good, but they could use some improving. As a teacher leader, I may be asked to facilitate a meeting where I am in charge of introducing a topic, presenting a new idea, or keeping the group on track (Danielson, 2006). My action plan to improve my facilitation skills is to lead more group meetings. Also, I need to do more reading on what it takes to be a good facilitator. Mobilizing people to a common purpose in another skill I possess. Of all of the skills I have listed, this skill is the one that I need the most work. Mobilizing people require teachers to be active communicators and not be afraid of engaging others to complete a task. In today’s schools, the ones that are successful rely on teamwork from faculty and staff. My LOL team is a way I can improve on this skill. For example, my LOL team is responsible for many of the activities that we do at our professional development days. I love my job and put 100% in making my classroom the best it can be. As a teacher, when you bring optimism and enthusiasm to the classroom, it rubs off on the students. When students see my enthusiasm and passion, they know and understand I care about their learning. A characteristic of a teacher that has this disposition is that they have high expectations for themselves and expect the best of others (Danielson, 2006). My action plan to improve is to keep my teaching fresh in the classroom. For example, I need to try new strategies, and new activities so my style of teaching does not become stagnant or routine. I am bringing back a lot of knowledge and ideas from my Walden courses to my classroom. Professional development workshops are also a great place to learn new ideas. As a teacher, I am committed to student learning. I have high expectations for all of my students and want them to achieve and be successful. My courses at Walden University, professional development workshops, and collaborating with other professionals will ensure I continue to improve on this
