Skewing In Hamlet

I would set this scene in a large open room of the castle, towards the front, with tall white marble pillars holding up the high ceiling, so that the conversation echoes. It would take place around daybreak, with a slight drizzle against the large windows, which would let in gray muting light to the white room, creating a washed out but bright effect. Various decorations, such as painting and shelves with decorative vases on them, one of which Hamlet smashes during the scene, would line the walls of the room. In the center of the back wall there would be a massive portrait of the new king about half way done with a red curtain skewed to cover most of it. To the side of the room there would be a large flag of Denmark next to a smaller flag of

The two versions of Shakespeare's Hamlet that I will be contrasting today are Zeffrelli's Hamlet film from 1990 and Gregory Doran's Hamlet film from 2009. These two films, while the same script couldn't be any more different then they are. While Zeffrelli's Hamlet is set in a historically accurate Denmark, with elaborate costumes, elegant castles, swords and horse drawn carriages; Doran's Hamlet is set in modern 21rst century Denmark, with T-Shirts and jeans, guns, and cameras. Beyond the time era differences you can start to see, even at the very beginning of Zeffrelli's Hamlet, that while he is following the original script, he skips over certain sections or moves them around to suit his narrative. Whereas Doran's seems to stay completely accurate to…

Morals are a widely debated topic through the international community, and continues to play an important role in the shaping of society. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet struggles with balance between familial obligations and religious doctrines as he attempts to take revenge on his father’s murderer, his uncle and current king, while remaining morally righteous. Failure to comprehend the subtleties of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ultimately bring about his demise and he, ever faithful and rigid in his beliefs, loses in the hedonistic and corrupt politics of court. From the beginning of the play, Hamlet is presented with a dilemma that is emotionally and physically tolling. Instructed by his father’s ghost to kill the current king,…

    Misunderstanding In Hamlet

A person, when in any situation against their free choice, will continue to prolong their suffering as long as they can in order to keep what power or resources they have. Though they will continually try to manipulate and test their boundaries by any means necessary to evaluate where they stand and or to hopefully find a way out of their overall situation in its entirety. This exact case can be applied to numerous people and characters, but is exemplified perfectly by the character Gertrude from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Gertrude is commonly categorized by assumptions that criticize her nature and actions, but doing so puts the reader in a mindset that incapacitates the ability for that reader to truly understand the depth and grace of Gertrude…

Hamlet uses juxtaposition to contrast several things. To start, he contrasts the dew he wishes to become like, something that is entirely temporary and could disappear in a matter of minutes, with permanent flesh, something that he cannot escape so easily. He compares his mother to a beast, the latter of which would apparently mourn a death longer than she had, which shows the start of his disgust toward women. He then contrasts his father and Claudius by comparing the former to Hyperion (which represents light and regality) and a satyr, a lustful mix between a horse and man. This develops his general disgust toward his uncle, whom he considers so lustful and indulgent.…

Although children often have a close relationship with their parents, Hamlet’s anger with his mother’s demeanor regarding Claudius, shows that past interactions with women can set inequitable stereotypes and prospects on women holistically. In Hamlet’s first soliloquy, he is saddened by his father's death , but his feelings soon transition to anger due of his mother's lack of grief. Hamlet feels betrayed by Gertrude and commences to have a negative view on all women: Must I remember? Why, she would hang on him As if increase of appetite had grown By what it fed on, and yet, within a month— Let me not think on ’t. Frailty, thy name is woman!—…

The monologue by Hamlet is given as an apology and explanation to Laertes regarding Polonius’ murder before their duel for Laertes’ vengeance. In lines 5.2.172 - 178 and in 5.2.187-190, Hamlet asks Laertes to forgive him for killing Polonius (though Hamlet does not openly admit it). His speech is eloquent and courteous (“Give me your pardon, sir,” 5.2.172) and he refers to himself in first person. He tells Laertes (and the rest of the party) in lines 5.2.179-186 that it was “his madness” (5.2.183) that murdered Polonius rather than Hamlet himself. However, his diction switches to third-person, mimicking that of a jester’s or a madman’s and amplifying the justification of his crime.…
