Starting Out and the Basics
If you’re thinking about learning how to ride a skateboard there are some things you’ll need before you join the skater world. You’ll need a skateboard of course, but what kind you get is all up to you. Also, you should get knee, elbow, and wrist pads. Anyone who is going to start skateboard should get a helmet and a pair if durable shoes. I personally, being the one prone to accidents, decided to start with a long board. Of course I have good shoes and a helmet.
You should probably know what you need to do when you want to stop. Since there are no brakes, you’ll just have to step off the board on the run. Be careful not to let your board continue without you as I did the first few tries.

The wheels were made of urethane, and they had better traction on pavement. Skateboarders had the idea to attach these new wheels to their skateboards, and thus the modern skateboard was born. Since these new wheels were able to grip the ground better, tricks and stunts that skateboarders just imagined before had become possible. They were able to actually do these more intricate and gnarly stunts and tricks with the new improvements. These wheels also allowed skateboarders to go faster, make sharp moves, and be able to glide over uneven pavement without falling or loosing speed. Later, manufacturers experimented with different designs and kinds of materials for skateboards. The curve at the back of the skateboard, or kick-tail, became a standard requirement. The kick-tail allowed skateboarders to better control the board. Some skater then discovered is was easy to skate in old abandoned swimming pools. They discovered they could use the bowl-shaped surface to do tricks. “The Lords of Dogtown” is a movie based on young kids who did this. Watching that movie gave me an appreciation for the many personalities involved in skating, not just bad
