I have always known that I want to work in the medical field. Now, I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to do in the field but I knew that I was meant to be in it. Over the years I have grown up in a hospital setting. My mom is a Charge Nurse at Island Hospital, so I have always had someone who could show me the glory of being a Nurse. However, I actually really enjoy it. Going into the first day I was extremely nervous. No matter where you go, you hear horror stories about how horrible nursing homes are. I went into clinicals thinking that I was going to be horrible, and that I was going to witness something horrific. But I didn’t. My first day was easy. The CNA that I was assigned to for the day didn’t have very many patients that required a lot of hands on care. I changed a few bed pans, learned how to chart, and I sat and listened to many of the resident’s life stories. I learned so much that it was hard to wrap my head around the information. That day really helped me understand that all nursing homes are not terrible, and that some actually care about the wellbeing of their residents. The second day of clinicals was even better. Not only did I have the pleasure of meeting and getting to know more residents, I also got to practice my skills on actual residents. I aided residents with getting up and getting dressed, learned how to use the Hoyer lift, sat with a resident and 1-on-1 fed them, and so much more! It is fascinating to see how much a person’s mood can change just by talking to them like they aren’t in need of care. The moment that I left Fidalgo Care Center I just knew that I was meant to be there. I can feel it in my bones that I am supposed to be a part of the Medical Field, and I am so excited to see where my success in this class will take
