Sizzler And The American Dream By Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee

What is the “American Dream”? The American Dream is seen through many different angles, aspects, and goals. Everyone has his/her own definition and value(s) to how the American Dream is defined and how to accomplish their dream. For example, in Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee’s Sizzler and the Search for the American Dream, she describes how her father had “dreamed of having steak dinners every night” and how her mother “dreamed of getting lace dollies and matching china.” (Lee) So as stated before, everyone has their own definition as to what the American dream would mean. For me, the American Dream has three critical key points in order to be successful throughout life; that is to be well educated in high school and/or college, have a good high paying job that one most enjoys doing, and having a bit of self/family leisure time to get away from the hard work at the job to lower stress. Everyone in the United States needs to have an education to do just about anything: drive, read, payments, etc. To live the American Dream, it is very crucial to have some kind of education that would lead to having a job to make money and to save that money to do whatever someone wants to do with the money. For example, in John Matthews’s Stress and the American Dream, he describes how there are stressors in life, such as “Major business readjustments and Changing lines of work or promotion” (Matthews), he describes how “Many goals – marriage, having children, excelling in work, retirement – get lumped up into one ‘super achievement’ called the American Dream” (Matthews) cause stress when trying to gain the American Dream.
