Where have all the animals gone? Mass extinctions are periods in time where large numbers of species go extinct. Newsela staff claims that "The most famous mass extinction came from space, but the biggest might have been because of carbon dioxide." Scientists predict that humans could be the cause of the 6th mass extinction. Humans burned off ages worth of different types of fossil fuels, because of this the climate has changed. According to worldpopulationbalance.org, human population has doubled in the last 45 years. Which means land is being taken up to build more houses, so animals are being effected with habitat destruction. When we build on land, all of the construction equipment …show more content…
The birds and their nests filled with eggs were easy prey for the newcomers. Soon enough, the sailors had poached the Dodo birds to extinction. Poaching is illegally hunting animals for a valuable piece of the animal. In 2011, the Western Black Rhino was confirmed to be extinct by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Mao Zedong, one of the many poachers, used the rhino's horns to concoct TCM, a new medicine that was said to "cure everything from fevers to cancer." as stated in Scientific American's blog discussing the subject. Although TCM was developed, the rhinos where hunted to extinction, therefore there is no chance of making the exact same medicene. Scientists may have to start over and figure out how to implement another ingredient that is similar to the Western Black Rhino's horns. You can infer that from the IUCN's warnings, the Javan Rhino from Asia is also about to retire. Both elephants' extinctions have the same cause, …show more content…
Climate change effects many animals. One of many, the Adelie penguin, whose glaciers are melting due to the heat caused by global warming. Adelie penguins' food source is krill, and krill live on the bottom of glaciers. But because of global warming, the glaciers are melting. Global warming is the escalation of temperature in Earth's atmosphere. According to the National Wildlife Federation, "Scientists have concluded that most of the observed warming is very likely due to the burning of coal, oil, and gas. Human activity--such as burning fossil fuels--causes more greenhouse gases to build up in the atmosphere." Amphibians are highly sensitive to change in climate. Of many amphibians, the Golden Toad went extinct. One of the effects of global warming are droughts which caused the Golden Toads habitats to be low in humidity and fairly high
