The sixth extinction is upon us.

The past few mass extinctions were caused by varying things, but we are causing the one we will all be facing. Many types of animals are threatened by the carbon dioxide we have been emitting, ranging from the depletion of ozone to the deforestation we have been condoning.

The planet is undergoing the largest series of extinctions of species since 65 million years ago, when the larger dinosaurs went extinct. An estimated natural background rate was an estimated one to five extinction of species each year, while scientists say that dozens are going extinct everyday, saying that the extinction of species is occurring at 1,000 to 10,000 the natural background rate. There are many ways that we are contributing

Due to over killing of animals, miss use of natural resources and lack of efficient means of spreading the word on what’s going on, we may be heading to a sixth extinction. After reading the book I took a closer look at the world around me and I did notice that the world is changing right before our eyes. I have never seen a great auk and chances are no one ever will because they are extinct. They did not just die off, they were…

The first chapter in the sixth extinction is geared towards focusing on the rapid extinction of frogs, a species that has survived over 400 million years. Elizabeth Kolbert, the author believes that we are entering a sixth extinction and that it is crucial to pay close attention to it because any slight change can drastically influence an entire ecosystem and its inhabitants. The epicenter of the extinction seemed to begin in a small town in Central Panama called El Valle de Anton. The Panamanian golden frog was one of Panama’s most iconic attractions. The frog is small, toxic, and has black speckles.…

Elizabeth Kolbert’s book, The Sixth Extinction, covers the argument that we are currently in another mass extinction because the Earth is following similar trends as it did in the past five mass extinctions. The first chapter of The Sixth Extinction starts out by discussing frogs. Frogs are the one of the oldest species on Earth; however, the extinction rates of frogs is higher than it’s ever been, and it’s only increasing. Kolbert then focused specifically on Panamanian golden frogs. Not too long ago, these frogs were plentiful, but recently the numbers have decreased due to human’s introducing a native species to Panama: Chytrid fungus.…

With the time bomb slowly ticking away, one might allude this ‘mass extinction’ upcoming to the end of the cretaceous period when the dinosaurs took their last breath before being extinguished by meteors. This similarity is the world’s most recognizable extinction, even though there were four more throughout history. Today’s problem is identified as a ‘mass extinction’ as opposed to a ‘background extinction’, a process which transpires with little disturbance to other species as one…

According to Elizabeth Kolbert, planet Earth is on schedule for a sixth major loss – the sixth extinction. In contrast with the previous five this sixth extinction may be caused by a combination of factors as various as global warming, ocean acidification, deforestation, and overconsumption. All of these factors can be placed under the umbrella of a single true cause: humanity. The signs are all around us. The Panamian golden frog, the colorful coral reef, the little brown bat of New England, and countless more have disappeared in this lifetime, just as the great auk, Neanderthals, and countless more disappeared in previous lifetimes.…

Have you ever heard of the West African Black Rhinoceros? As of 2011 this species is extinct and society could have prevented it (Gerkens). The species is thought to have died off, because of poaching, but taking precautions could have prevented their extinction. This is just one example of Earth’s deterioration with irreversible consequences that could have been averted. Societies use Earth and all of its resources and expects no repercussions.…

The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert describes Earth's five previous mass extinctions and how humans are to blame for leading our biodiversity into a sixth mass extinction. As an animal lover and an Earth-history enthusiast, I was excited to begin The Sixth Extinction. Kolbert begins by documenting her scientific journeys, relating biodiversity's current extinction rates, to the previous five, showing the interconnectedness through history. Following this, Kolbert emphasizes that we are currently in a geological period called the Anthropocene, named after the significant impact humans have on the surrounding environment. Additionally, Kolbert researches individual species to find a reason why they suddenly went extinct.…

Many species in the world are endangered and eventually becoming extinct. The main problem that generates extinction is human activity; people cause extinction every day and unknowingly to them, it is killing innocent animals. Due to pollution, natural forces, human interaction, and loss of habitats, animal extinction is a major crisis in the world; people are the only ones that can save the animal population before it is too late. Pollution is among the most insidious threats to animal extinction. It can be as obvious as sewage and oil spills in water or as invisible as chemicals used every day.…
