When looking over the various topics that I remain concerned about in our country, I decided to choose poverty as it both well studied for the effects that poverty has on children and how poverty can affect children’s lives well into the future when they are adults. A further reason that I selected poverty is based on the fact that my state is going through a budget crisis that is affecting programs that help children in poverty. Several of these programs are being cut either by the number of children/families that can be assisted or the program is cut entirely by DHS. Unfortunately, the budget crisis has made some school district’s decide to cut the school week from Monday-Friday to Monday-Thursday to save on money as education has taken cuts for at least the last two years. Children in poverty will be more affected by this decision as parents from higher income brackets can send their children to different schools.
