Six Moon Landings: An Analysis

Decent Essays
Not only did women outsmarted men on an unfair playing field where women were at a disadvantage, but they beat them at their own game. Based on socially constructed opinions, men are said to be better with numbers than women. Nevertheless, a woman was the first to figure out how to safely send a man into space and how to return alive. This was the beginning of many moon landings and space traveling. Unfortunately, it was an accomplishment that was swept under the rug, simply because it was achieved by a woman working in a predominantly male workforce. (St. Martin, 2017, Para. 1&2) wrote, “Fame has finally found Katherine Johnson – and it only took a half-century, six moon landings, a best-selling book and an Oscar-nominated movie… For more

Levy ridicules women who use Raunch culture to be successful, but there are plenty of women who have broken the stereotype. She argues that “women who’ve wanted to be perceived as powerful have long found it more deficient to identify with men than to try and elevate female sex to their level” but never mentioned women who have high positions without trying to be a loophole woman (Levy 245). There are numerous women like Ronda Rousey, who is the first and current UFC women’s Bantamweight holding an undefeated record in mixed martial arts or Roberta Bondar, who is the first female astronaut and neurologist in space. These successful women and many other females are in a high position without seeking approval from men.…

“‘I am not content to sit back and listen to their silly excuses,’ Cobb wrote to Cochran, shedding her reserve, If anyone seriously doubted that women should be astronauts, let them prove it by gaining and testing women to see how they measure up, she fired back. ‘The qualification rules have been laid down for astronauts and although NASA say they have nothing against women, it just so happens that the requirements are such that no woman can meet them.’” (138). This passage connects with the rest of the novel because it expresses the fueling hatred Cobb had towards NASA for not allowing women to join their program or have the opportunity to fly their aircrafts.…

Growing up, Mary Anning lived in poverty and made little money selling fossils from Lyme Regis. Anning is not known for her discoveries of fossils because of her social status and her gender during the 1800s. This can be compared to the experiences that women endured in the Langley Memorial aeronautical Laboratory. Women were considered computers instead of actual mathematicians because of their gender and social statuses. Both situations had the same notation that men are at a higher standard and women are below them all.…

I had always been fascinated by modern mysteries and conspiracy theories, but before this class, I had no clue what to accept and how to analyze the information that I was presented to me. I chose the topic of the Moon Landing, because it enabled me to take a second look at the conspiracy theory through a new lens of experience. To understand where this idea of a hoax originates, we need to understand what was going on before the Apollo 11 moon landing. Starting in the 1950s, America was in a cold war with Soviet Russia, which was less of a physical battle and more of a challenge of who had a better structured government. It was a challenge of superiority that eventually led to the space race in 1955.…

Before the 1970 's, “women, when they were to be found, played supporting roles” in the space program. In early 1970 though, Poppy Northcutt became the first and only female in the mission control room. She helped make sure the astronauts got to the moon and returned home safely. She remembered realizing, “I’m as smart as they [men] are,” as she sat in a room with all white men trying to work out earths projectors and tough equations. This small break through, with a woman having an important role within a usual male dominant career, was significant.…

Maybe, if they did they would have to do really good job of hiding the evidence showing that is was just filmed.…

We Should Not Go Back to the Moon The first time America stepped foot on the moon was on July 20th, 1969, however, the last time Americans stepped foot on the moon is was in 1972. Charles Krauthammer, in the Washington Post, from 2009, argues the we should go back to the moon. Krauthammer states that we go back to the moon “for the wonder and glory of it” and because of the moon's “immense possibilities” (57). Krauthammer fails to mention a lot of vital information that could happen when we go back to the moon like, where will the money come from, the risks of going to the moon, and lastly what benefit would come from going to a place that we have already spent time on.…

Many companies advertise their products by associating them with a half-naked woman or a sexual connotation. As a perfect example, Sprite released a commercial that dehumanizes a woman in the utmost way. In the 2009 commercial, which has been banned, a woman is recorded on her knees in front of a man and this is intended to be perceived as the woman orally pleasuring him, his male genital then appears as a Sprite bottle, and explodes in her mouth and all over her face. Commercials such as this one dehumanize women and cause society to only see them as sexual objects. The company must have seen the message that they were sending out to the world, which is the reason it was banned but that cannot explain why it was discussed as recorded in the first place, whether the releasing of it was intended or not.…
