Six Day School Breaks

Improved Essays
School's out! Many students anticipate their days off of school, whether it is one day or two months. These students relish the time they do not have to focus on projects, homework, and tests. There is also much discussion on the topic of whether or not schools should have longer, infrequent breaks or more frequent, shorter breaks. Being a student myself, I believe students would benefit the most by having longer, less frequent breaks. Schools should implement a six day school week with Sundays as the only day off. This will allow the Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring and summer breaks to be extended. Some students travel internationally during these vacations. By extending the break, the student would be able to return home

During the summer break, students will usually forget a little of what they have learned over their school time. The 15 day break will allow the students to remember more and keep their regular schedule. Also, these 15 days can allow the students to get any late work complete or prepare for something in school coming in the next couple of days. Students going to school could enjoy it more, due to the shorter school period instead of going for the continuous 180 days of school. If students can remember more and enjoy school more, then the students should be able to become more educated.…

Instead of a ten-week summer vacation, in which information is difficult to retain, we would instead have a four to six-week vacation period, creating frequent and smooth rolling breaks throughout the year. Lessening the need for longer review periods within the beginning of the school year. Allowing for a more regularized, stress reducing break system for not only for student, but for staff as well (Yeager, "Year-Round Education Program Guide."). Stress can often put a damper on our productivity and have detrimental health effects if not…

With the short breaks that year-round school schedules provide, students are less likely to be bored and have less of a slide in knowledge. According to Jordan Catapano, year-round schools’ break schedules add more options for vacations and rests. Opposed to long breaks, these breaks are more ideal because they also relieve summer slide. With short, frequent breaks, teachers don’t have to surrender much time to review lessons (Catapano). Students and their families have more vacation options because of the many breaks, but they don’t have the option of summer camps and jobs with the year-round schedule.…

“ In the 45-15 model students attend school for 45 days and then have a 15-day break, and the 60-20 model students attend school for 60 days and then break for 20 days.” (Educational Leadership: Reimagining School: Year-round Schooling). With this schedule, students have the set amount of time to go to school then have the two weeks to refresh and refocus their brains to help with focusing and paying attention in the classroom. “One idea is that students and teachers, refreshed by more frequent breaks, will not get burnt-out as easily.” (pbs.org, 2001).…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
