In 2015, I was notified by my supervisor that she was resigning and moving to another country. She informed me that I would receive a new supervisor, a male. Since I have been employed with the agency I haven’t had a male supervisor. I didn’t know how well I would work with a male. I thought maybe he would be difficult to communicate.…
In this essay, I will discuss my belief that Susan Wolf would argue an individual is morally responsible for actions caused by implicit bias. Furthermore, I will address the difference between the conclusions drawn by Wolf with Robin Zheng’s. In Susan Wolf’s “Sanity and the Metaphysics of Responsibility”, Wolf proposed the sane deep-self view. She redefined the criteria for sanity by quoting M’Naughten Rule that “a person is sane if (1) he knows what he is doing and (2) he knows that what he is doing is either right or wrong.”…
The etiology of a condition is its cause or origin. The etiologies of addiction are those areas that influence the when and how factors of addiction. It is important to identify and understand how one gets started in their addiction. To understand what causes addiction, you must look deep into yourself and figure out why you started using to begin with, there is always an underlying reason.…
There are many topics discussed in class that relate to my topic of innocent people incarcerated in America. We looked at everything from definitions of race and ethnicity, to a movie showing us the actual bias in races and ethnicities in the criminal justice system. There were also readings we did that showed the discrimination and bias. We discussed social institutions. These are learned behavior from family, peers, education, and religion.…
Inter-Observer Errors are critical in understanding the data as a whole. It’s to understand the error that comes with the interpretation of two or more individuals making observations of the same issue. This is a sole reason why scientists take multiple data sets in order to weed out these inter-observer errors. It can affect the end result, or calculation resulting in human bias. They are very similar, as my handedness quotient was 60 which is closer to 100 than to 0 (Ambi) which relates to my limb dominance which is “Extreme Right Handed.”…
An individual’s interaction with others and the world around can influence, alter, one’s behaviour, actions and beliefs. However, various external factors influence an individual such as, positive and accepting environments an individual’s sense of belonging can enrich and expand, while negative behaviours such as exclusion and rejection might limit and restrict it; this in turn moulds one’s sense of acceptance and value of being. This idea is explored in the picture book, The Island by Armin Greder which analyses segregation and discrimination, and further alludes to the strong xenophobic culture and how such ideals can influence the experience of belonging.…
The act of regulating one's emotions in a manner that is socially acceptable might not always play out as intended. More specifically, when faced with an unpleasant or undesirable stimulus, one may attempt to perform a variety of strategies to moderate his or her initial emotional response. Of the numerous techniques available, some of the most commonly used strategies are cognitive reappraisal, distraction, and expressive suppression. In line with this research, early findings continuously demonstrated that the intensity of a stimulus can drive individuals to choose the method of distraction. However, recent findings have revealed that when one has many possible reappraisal options, it is more than likely that he or she will favor reappraisal…
To begin with, the enduring issue Person–Situation refers to the controversy concerning whether the person or the situation is more influential in determining a person's behavior. Because of personality traits, psychologists believe that people have consistent personalities that guide their behaviors across situations. They believe that behavior is not merely a matter of reflex, instinct, or conditioned response. Rather, it occurs in response to the meaning of the stimulus, and reflects active cognitive processes of perceiving, learning, remembering, thinking, and linguistic…
And that a person’s desires, motives, and emotions are the effects of their genes, upbringing, and experiences. This chain of causality was interesting primarily because it raised the question of accountability. While reading the passage I remembered a discussion I had in my psychology class. The discussion had to do with the upbringing and mental illnesses of notorious criminals.…
In contrast, theory of casual attribution focuses on the cause of a person’s behavior and circumstances. For example, suppose someone walks out of a local movie theater in the middle of the movie, “why did that person get up from his seat?” “Was he uncomfortable?” “Was he angry or insulted by the movie?” 5) What do you think contributes to the tendency to perceive others inaccurately?…
Social psychology and its principles are present throughout the world whenever people interact with one another. Social psychologists look to study the way people act and feel when they are in social situations. The ideas and concepts of social psychology are applicable to many of the interactions that we experience in our life. My interview with JP Morgan Chase for a summer program was an instance when I fell victim to many of the flaws in my thought process. Like all other ambitious high school students, I applied for an internship during the summer before my senior year at a JP Morgan Chase, so that I could develop the skills and abilities needed to do well in college and at a potential future job.…
This can occur due to an individual’s personality. Not only that but an individual’s culture, views on life, and his surrounding can also influence behavior. On the other hand, there are also those people who take any bad interaction and still manage to guide their behavior in a positive manner. For instance, based on the principle discussed, a drug abuser can turn his addictive desires around. That person can possibly interact with other people who have had a worse drug experience and guide his future behavior in a positively way based and that interaction.…
Cognitive bias is a limitation in objective thinking that is caused by the tendency for the human brain to perceive information through a filter of personal experience and preferences. Cognitive biases are often a result of an attempt to simplify information processing. Psychologists Daniel Kahneman, Paul Slovic, and Amos Tversky introduced the concept of psychological bias in the early 1970s. They published their findings in their 1982 book, "Judgment Under Uncertainty."…
Attribution theory can be summarized as adding an explanation or a reason to a specific observed or taken action / behavior, be the added reason internally or externally related to the action. This is applied to both positive and negative behaviors that are either observed or done by us. First, let's have a look at the internal attribution. Internal attribution is simply believing that the reason that prompted a behavior is internal.…
People learn a great deal from their experiences as they can change their entire outlook and attitude towards life as well as their communication with others. Perception directly effects communication and explains how the same message can be interpreted differently by people. The relationships we have with people through communication enable us to have similar perceptions of the world, however no two people can see the world in exactly the same way because of differences in their fields of experience. There are experiences that we share together such as, love, the instinct to survive, the desire for health, knowledge and happiness but each individual has events in life that make them experience these things differently. Perception is affected…
