Situational Leadership Simulation Reflection

Improved Essays
I feel that this 2 phase simulation has definitely enhanced my personal skills within leadership and teamwork but I definitely feel this was not the result from the simulation alone. Since the team went for a more democratic style leadership, I was able to utilise 2 main management models I learnt about within this course one being the “Situational Leadership Model”. This was highlighted within my actions more so in the second simulation rather than the first and it defined my position within the team which depended on how each member would respond to situations along the simulation. Due to my personal motivation within the second simulation, I was always looking for opportunities in which I could further progress both my goals and my team members goals at the same time thus having the path-goal theory representing my role within the team. Since the team was really motivated to do well in the second simulation after our poor performance in simulation 1, I could agree that the group was at the fourth stage of readiness where a majority did the best they could in attempt to improve our results and we viewed each other’s inputs equal to any other team member. Even though at times someone in the team may have seemed …show more content…
In our case, this could only have been achieved through a solid form of communication particularly within team simulations like the Everest Climb. My team had minimal forms of communications during the first simulation and found it really difficult to express ideas towards the group but because the second simulation was to be done in person, this really showed to be effective through the comparison of our Everest 2 results being 67% up from our Everest 1 results only achieving

During the beginning of the simulation our company came out of the gates a little slow, but thanks to some key marketing as well as production changes, we were able to get our shareholder-value all the way up to second in our world. The approach we took was to specialize in the youth and mountain biking segments of the market, which gave us the second most awareness towards our products. Although the approach we used worked pretty well for us, I think offering another youth or mountain bike model would have vastly increased revenue. Will, Vince, and I turned out to be very good fits for one another, we were able to go through the simulation as a unit and make decisions based on the group input of everyone. Will was our unspoken leader, but…

In our Business Planning Seminar, we have had the opportunity to work as a virtual team. A virtual team is different than a traditional team within an organization. Our virtual team consisted of individual team members who are separated by physical proximity and distance. Our team was not only separated by distance, but by time zones, cultures, work, and personal lives. Much like a traditional team, our team was united by a shared goal and our interactions were based solely on technology and electronic communication.…

Simulation is a flexible teaching method that can be adopted to meet both the programme requirements and students learning needs. A stimulated environment provides conducive learning that enables students to repetitively practice until competence is attained. One challenge my students had was course overload. With so much information in a short period of time they were unable to link the theory to the practical environment. As such, I have realized it was not the actual learning of the skills that was the problem for the students, it was the application of them.…

The aspect of leadership that I need to focus most on improving is that of having the ability to balance work, school, and time with my family. I find that a great deal of the time I spend at home is spent working on schoolwork. This unbalance takes away from time that I should be spending with my husband and children and often leaves me feeling overwhelmed. Many people have the tendency to procrastinate on projects, and find them having to rush to do these tasks at the last minute. A big part of my problem is feeling that I need to complete assignments as soon as they are given.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

Leadership is both a science and an art. Good leadership requires an accurate sense of self, a well-communicated vision, the ability to earn the trust of others and the capability to take effective action. In order to “build your house of leadership” your actions must inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more. (Duren, Lec. 2). Throughout the semester, I have learned that some of the five Kouzes and Posner leadership practices in The Leadership Challenge come naturally to me while others do not.…
