Movies are a great way to learn about leadership. And not many movies can compete with the Princess Bride (Reiner, 1987) when it comes to learning leadership. Let’s take a look at how leadership is demonstrated in each of the characters, based on the work of Komives, Lucas, and McMahon (2013): in Table 8.2: Examples of Common Roles in Groups (Komives et al., 2013, 323-324). These roles are as follows: “Information Seeker, Opinion Seeker, Opinion Giver, Summarizer, Clarifier, Gatekeeper, Encourager, Mediator, and Follower.” (Komives et al., 2013, 323-324; explanations of these roles may also be found there.)…

Leaders come out and strive when needed the most but this pride can go to their heads. The Oxford Dictionary states the definition of a leader is, “The person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country” (“leader”). In the book The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, it mentions two characters fighting for leadership and their names are Ralph and Jack. These two boys are stranded on an island and must figure out and fight to see who is more fit to lead the rest of the boys on the island. Leadership is one of the few traits that can separate one person from another, a leader or a follower. There are two kinds of leaders, one that will create a successful civilized society or, one that will turn a society completely upside down. When given the choice on how to lead a society, there are two choices, lead with kindness or lead through fear. In the book Lord of The Flies you can see the two types of leaders in Ralph, who creates a successful society with kindness, or Jack, who makes a corrupted society with fear. As the book goes on, yousee how effective each type of leadership can be, and that leading with fear is more effective than leading with kindness.…

The role of leadership is an essential aspect of an organization since it can determine the difference between success and failure. “Although leaders are gifted in different ways, with different personalities and varying skill sets, all leaders can grow, become more skillful, and become more competent so that they can achieve greater effectiveness” (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014, pp. 10). At times, leadership may seem overwhelming and complicated, but by concentrating on specific fundamentals they will find that they can guide the team with the assurance and competence. In every good film, there is an introduction, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and a conclusion. These are basic staples when it comes to writing and creating a film. But when it comes to the characters in a film, there are some other staples as well. One of these such staples is that there needs to be a solid leader in the film, one who can keep the story moving or put the main character back on track. In Lee Daniel’s “The Butler”, however, we see multiple leaders over the course of the movie, all showing different tactics of leadership that are stated in Barry Posner and James Kouzes’ book “The Leadership Challenge”.…
