Situational Leadership Model
Brendan McDonough (Donut) and Eric Marsh both evolved through the Situational Leadership Model in Only the Brave. The Situational Leadership Model is an approach that leadership is made up of a supportive and directional dimension depending on a situation based on the follower’s skill level and motivation (Northouse, 2016, p. 93).
D1 and S1. Upon meeting Marsh, Donut was a D1 follower with low competence of how to work against wild fires, but had a high commitment due to him just having a new born daughter (Kosinski, 2017). As Donut …show more content…
Although brief, Donut develops into a D2 follower during the evaluation of the team to become hotspot squad. It was his first wild fire experience and the members of his team, especially Christopher, harassing him causing Donut to lose his commitment. Marsh, a S2 leader, during the evaluation gave Donut clarification and explained his decisions, even when conflicting with another leader (Strong, 2017; Kosinski, 2017).
D3 and S3. Donut becoming a D3 follower becomes apparent when he discusses leaving the hotspot with Marsh. Donut is very skilled in fighting fires, but wants to join the structural team instead, showing he has high competence, but low commitment. Marsh responds originally very angry, but later with support of his ideas being a S3 leader (Strong, 2017; Kosinski, 2017).
D4 and S4. Lastly, Donut becomes a D4 follower when March lets him spilt from the group and watch the fire on his own (Kosinski, 2017). Donut has a high amount to knowledge about wild fires and was committed to stopping this wild fire. Marsh, a S4 leader, trusted Donut in his skills and decisions allowing Donut to act independently (Northouse, 2016, p.
