Situational Irony

In the poem “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson, a man is viewed highly by the people on the streets. On one calm summer night Richard Cory went home and ended his life by shooting himself in the head. The tone of the poem is ironic. There are three types of irony, the three types of irony are verbal, situational, and dramatic. This poem expresses many examples of situational irony. Situational irony is when the reader expects something to happen but something totally different happens. “Irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected” (Dictionary.com).
The first example of situational irony that stands out to me is when everyone believes Richard Cory is a happy man, but in reality he is not. In the beginning of the poem the author spends most of the poem expressing how everybody wanted to be like Richard Cory. Richard Cory was a gentlemen. “He was a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim” (Richard Cory pg851). Richard Cory was also a very wealthy man, they said

When Richard Corey shockingly shoots himself point blank in the head it comes as a surprise to everyone. The author leads up to the death by saying “one calm summer night” and then says that Richard Corey shoots himself. By the beginning of the sentence the last thing you would think is that someone is going to die, let alone shoot themselves. This is an example of situational irony in itself. “And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head” (Richard Cory pg851). The author makes you think nothing is going to happen when he says “one calm summer night” (Richard Cory pg851). This is ironic because the author catches the reader off guard by making the reader think nothing is going to happen, but then Richard Cory ends up putting a bullet through his

All of these stories have some sort of irony in them. For example, in Fahrenheit 451 Bradbury starts of the novel with situational irony. He states “It was a pleasure to burn”(Bradbury 1). This is situational irony because Montag is later introduced as a fireman, and in today’s society a fireman is someone who puts out fire, not start them. Another type of irony in this novel is dramatic irony.…

First is dramatic irony, which is where the reader or audience knows something about the character that the character themselves doesn’t know. For this he used an example of Oedipus a character in Greek mythology. The story involves a young boy who is kicked out of his home when his father learns that he is to be killed by Oedipus. After growing up, Oedipus does end up killing his own father, due to the precautions that his father took in order to avoid that exact scenario: Irony. He also discusses situational irony, where the situation turns out different than expected.…

We see him as so happy in fact, that we begin to envy him because, “He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim.” According to others, Richard Cory had everything he needed to be happy. Physically speaking, he was good looking and clean-seeming. Furthermore, we see him as a deeper individual who is humble and “always human when he talked,” despite his perceived superiority over the speaker of the poem. Richard Cory had everything that anyone would need to feel content in life.…

One type of irony, situational, is shown when the villagers line up to draft in the lottery. It is thought that humans would avoid the pick for death by any means but instead they participate with much volition. An example of verbal irony is Mrs. Delacroix name which translates into “of the cross” symbolizing Christianity. Jesus said he who is without out sin cast the first stone, but Mrs. Delacroix disregards that. After the lottery “…(she) selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands” (34).…

Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

In “Popular Mechanic”, Carver told us two issues in the story. However, as the Carver told us at the ending line if the story, “In this manner, the issue was decided,” the author did not make clear what ‘issue’ was ‘decided.’ The ‘issue’ that the text describes as ‘decided’ could be either the argument between the parents or the fate of the baby but not both. Both parents repeatedly say they want the baby. Hence, if the meaning of the last line can never be known, what happens in the story can never be known as well.…
