Situational Irony In The Story Of An Hour

The story of an hour is a story of an hour is a short and brief story written by Kate Chopin, in which she talks mainly about Louis Mallard; a women who eventually suffers from heart disease. Louis Mallard also suffers from the death of her husband, Brent Mallard. It’s said that Mr. Mallard dies in a rail road accident. At first, Mrs. Mallard suffers deeply much from her husband’s death, therefore, cries for his death. After a while she seems to accept her reality and starts looking the good side from it. She begins to feel free and liberated because she believes that she will be better without him. Once she believes she is living in the reality of having to deal with the death of her dead husband, Mr. Mallard, Louis Husband appears to be alive. Mrs. Louis receives a heart attack and dies from the impression of seeing her husband alive. Doctors say that she died from joy and excitement. But are the doctor’s assumption and belief , right? Mr. Mallard lives and Mrs. Mallard dies, that is considered a situational irony, because the reader doesn’t expect the death of Mrs. Mallard. Another irony from the story is the fact that the reader doesn’t expect the feeling of excitement and joy from Mrs. Mallard’s part of knowing from the death of her husband. Anyone would believe that after the death of a loved one, one should feel depressed. A dramatic Irony is considered when, the doctors say/ assume that Mrs. Mallard dies from joy.
The background of the story, “The story of an hour “establishes a theme of a forbidden joy of independence. A joy that can only be viewed in private by Mrs. Mallard when she is told that her husband is dead. She first feels sadness and grief, but later on after assimilating the news she starts to feel a sensation of joy and independence .Something that she most likely always wished
