Peter Ustinov once said, “Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious.” In the short story “There was Once” by Margaret Atwood, the author describes Western culture stereotypes by questioning them to such extremes that the narrator is finally incapable to tell her/his story. The author uses the high comedy, humorous elements of situational irony and hyperboles to communicate the theme that meaning and importance can be lost in over-generalization or over- specificity.
One of the comedic effects the author uses in this short story is situational irony.
Situational irony is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. In paragraph 3, the line says “Who lived with her wicked stepmother in a house in the suburbs." This is evidence of situational irony. You wouldn’t expect a house in the suburbs when you’re telling a fairy tale. The author uses this sentence to make the reader surprised when you’re reading this sentence. Also, In the first paragraph, the line says "There was once a poor girl, as beautiful as she was good,” This is also another piece of

Hyperboles are exaggerated statements or claim not meant to be taken literally. In paragraph 29, the line says “Everything is about you.” This is evidence of hyperbole. This means that all you talk about is yourself and nothing else. The author uses this sentence to show more drama in this short story. In paragraph 28, the line says “And stepmothers-they always get it in the neck.” This doesn’t mean that step-mothers actually get in your neck, it’s an exaggeration of saying that stepmothers just want to know what you’re doing at all times. The author uses this sentence to show a more efficient way of saying the line than through plain language. These are 2 examples of hyperboles. It’s just an easier way to communicate ideas, emotions, and

In the short stories, “Under the I," “Penny in the dust," and “After the sirens," irony is used to express meaning. To begin with, in the first short story “Under the I” situational irony is used to contribute to the theme that in order to prosper in life, one must have a positive attitude and have the will to take chances in life in order to fulfill their potential. This idea is clearly demonstrated in the context by how Mrs. McNaughton taught Harold to be optimistic and stand up for himself rather than letting people rule his life for him after he discovered her secret “… Mrs. McNaughton couldn't be there. You see she did pass away —of a heart attack —there, last week after the bingo…” (Alford, 16). Further more, in the short story “Penny…

This is also presented in the quote “ten times around the world”. The use of a hyperbole creates a sense of belonging as he chooses to stay within its boundaries. This may be a result of positive isolation in a secure place that he has control over after his experience of displacement after the war. This is juxtaposed to Peter as he feels like he does not feel a relationship or sense of belonging with his father and his…

Although each utilizes situational irony, the authors use this form of irony to further the plot of the story in differing ways. In “How I Met My Husband,” Alice Munro uses situational irony to increase the suspense and uncertainty of Edie’s future until the climax of the story occurs. However, Alice Walker utilizes situational irony in “Everyday Use” to strengthen the climax of the narrative of the story, when the mother finally refuses to indulge her daughter, rather than increase the suspense leading up to it. Instead, Walker utilizes verbal irony to increase the suspense leading up to the climax. While the mother’s emotions and feelings are not stated overtly, the verbal irony presents details to the reader to betray the mother’s emotions, particularly her frustration at her daughter’s “rejection” of her childhood lifestyle combined with her loyalty she feels towards her daughter.…
