In “Harrison Bergeron,” situational irony is a literary technique that is used multiple times throughout the story. In the story, the government attempts to eliminate any competition by making everyone equal. The stronger, smarter and more beautiful citizens must be handicapped. One ironic aspect of this story is how they make beautiful people wear masks so that no one feels less attractive than them. “….and their faces were masked, so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in.” This idea is ironic because even though the government attempts to hide their faces, the characters and the audience still know that they are the most beautiful because of their masks. “She must have
