Situational Humor

Across the variety of age groups that were interviewed in order to gather data, there were a few similarities that arose. The first similarity was the use of situational humor by almost all of the informants. This consisted of poking fun at everyday life, telling stories that were found humorous, or mentioning things that were may have been out of character and were found to be funny. The use of situational humor is believed to function like other types of humor in that it is conversation filler, it is more often than not spoken when there is a lull in a party or family gathering. This type of humor, although often off the cuff, does not have an intention to offend anyone but rather, as Subject M1 mentioned, it is used to “lighten things up …show more content…
An interesting function of humor presented by only one subject was to the use of humor to reflect on other things occurring in someone’s life, whether they knew they did it or not. As subject M1 said, “humor can mirror the larger issues that are taking place in a family, a school, a community and/or society.” This could imply that a person who uses humor as a way of making a point or putting someone down could have influential or upsetting things going on in their life and they use humor as an escape. Similarly, humor can function as a dictator for whether or not people are or will be getting along with each other. Meaning that if someone uses an off-color joke about a specific minority, some people might assume that the person would not get along with a person of that same minority. Similarly, Subject Y1 brought up the idea that the use of humor around another person can imply a certain level of comfort and mutual respect for that person. This shows that they believe they will not be criticized or judged for the humor that they enjoy. One of the most prominent functions of humor that many subjects agreed on was to put others down. The different topics that were used for this include religious, racial, and sexual humor as well as jokes about disabilities. The use of this humor functions in a way to devalue the life of the subject of the joke, putting their life …show more content…
Although many informants agreed that the United States has always been a society that has been prejudice or insulting to others. As subject M2 said, “human nature, to a degree, is to make fun of what they don’t understand.” This shows the presence of offensive humor could be seen to be omnipresent in this country since it was formed, whether it was the colonists making fun of the British, or visa verse. However, there are certain aspects of humor that have caused the respect for others to decrease over the recent years. As multiple informants suggested, the intensity of topics of humor, such racial, sexual, and religious, has been seen to increase because of the presence of the internet and social media. People seem to lack the amount of face to face contact that they did before the rise of smart technology, this leads to people not having to be in the physical presence of others to tell an offensive joke, therefore they will not face the repercussions that go along with insulting someone. Similarly, the large presence of these types of humor in society or in sources that younger individuals have access to has created the acceptance for children to repeat whatever they hear. A child might hear a joke about religion told by an older individual and deem it acceptable to restate

The present study investigated the possible relationship between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy. It also predicts that the use of humor as a coping strategy is negatively correlated with self-defeating humor Meaning, for example, if an individual has a lower self-defeating humor score, the lower the usage of humor as a coping strategy. However, the results of the present study do not support the idea of a negative correlation. Instead, there is a weak, but significant positive correlation between self-defeating humor and the use of humor as a coping strategy, rather than the negative correlation between the two measures.…

There are plenty of people that can take these offensive comments extremely personally, and are unable to witness the humor in the jokes. Satirical cartoons that air on television, such as The Boondocks and Black Dynamite, deal with racial topics and are viewed as humorous forms of entertainment. These cartoons are not taken seriously since many audience members misinterpret the cartoons’ context. Viewers not understanding the context of the shows and repeatedly viewing these images cause many to associate these events in the cartoons towards reality, which is one of the effects of the Ideomotor Theory. Fans of these shows also go on to social forums and post racial comments to get “upvotes” while others support the comments resulting in the reinforcements of poor behavior, which is an example of the Reward System theory. Overall, audience members not taking the satirical cartoons…

The stance that Alain de Botton took in his 2004 book, Stress Anxiety correctly addressed the goal of humorists and their effect on society. He states that humor is used, “ to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” In other words, humor used as a means to address the elephant in the room without fear of repercussion. Effective humorists have the ability to prompt or sway a person’s opinion in a way that a politician's speech simply can not.…

Rhetorical Context In this highly sensitive age, political correctness plays a key role in society, including the entertainment sector. Comedians often have to sensor their shows in order to accommodate this politically correct movement. While political correctness has been around since the 1930s, it is now more prevalent than ever, especially on college campuses, where comedians often perform. Part of the reason for the widespread presence is the media’s involvement.…

Humorists Everyone has a different sense of humor, whether it’s sarcastic or even stupid. Some, like Alain de Botton, the author of the 2004 novel Status Anxiety, believe that humorists play a vital role in society; however, that role cannot be considered vital in society today. While some believe that humorists are vital because they are able to make insulting (and sometimes inappropriate) insinuations about others, having the ability to get away with such an atrocity is not necessarily a good idea. For example, even though the show Seinfeld is used to poke fun at some of the things people say, do or act like, they may take offense to some of the content on the show; a Cigar Store Indian, a ‘Sidler’, even a holiday that one of the characters…

The role of humorists has expanded over the years, it has become an important way to communicate with the audience with one's ideas/mindset but it seems society does not fear to directly state their minds. Stating that, de Botton’s view of the role humorists, does not imply to our society, it is the truth. Our society is becoming a society with no filter, we speak our minds more louder and we take action more effectively. De Botton stated “... to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous to state directly”, we take political cartoonist, satirical writers and host of television programs more seriously, however, we speak our minds with no fear and take action to what we believe is right.…

Comically Crude The line drawn between comedy and vulgar references have become blurred in today's society. A comedian may make a joke which offends a great body of people all for the purpose of making a few laugh. Famous comedians make a living off of exploiting both groups, and individual peoples, with derogatory comments in order to make large masses of money. In the past, comedians would cross social lines and force society forward using both obscene language and seemingly deranged or lewd topics.…

Whether it be on the radio, in person during stand up, or on television, comedy is an easy way to lighten the mood and make easy conversation out of controversial topics.
