Most recently, especially in the 20th century, stress has been one of the leading complaints by employees in the workforce due to the complexity of most jobs. In a telephone poll done for the Marlin Company by Harris Interactive, 80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help (Harris). This statistic is one of many that has called for increase awareness needing to be shared about known stress factors and ways in which to decrease stress in one’s life. The constant appearance of stress comes from the basic obstacles that the workplace offers which includes deadlines, repetitive tasks or menial jobs, basic responsibilities, and much more. The myth of Sisyphus is inspiring due to the way in which Sisyphus takes the stress and uses that as a motivator in order to keep moving and surviving. Sisyphus could allow this metaphor for stress, the boulder, stop him from surviving yet he manages to take this obstacle and use it to his advantage. Sisyphus is symbolic of what the average employee should be, a conqueror of stress. Stress is a factor that cannot be avoided and is nonnegotiable in the way that it will constantly be with someone no matter how hard they attempt to get rid of it. Stress factors can affect a person’s body, feelings, and even the way they go about their everyday life. The thing that many rarely take the time to notice is that stress is comparable to a coin, whereas it has two sides to it, both negative and positive, and is not as single sided as one would want to …show more content…
Seeing as stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life and in that sense is inevitable in the workplace, there are various ways in which an employee can control the amount of stress that they use. A way that many higher up employees (CEOs, managers, etc.) are beginning to attempt to balance out this controversial area of stress in the work force revolves around multiple various methods of stress management. Stress management gives away an arsenal of tools that will help in relaxing the mind of an average working American citizen and can help the mind and body of a person to convert into a more unknotted daily working environment. Without certain stress management, over a period of time the variables of too much stress from the average working citizen can lead to some serious health problems. Ongoing, chronic stress can sometimes be known to cause diseases due to the bad habits that people obtain in their journey to curing stress. Chronic stress from job strain can also lead to increased risk with coronary disease (How stress affects your health).
