The dust is a symbol of the skin-deep of Catholicism. Marie is the obvious person who saw Sister Leopolds’s bottom of conscience. Moreover, the dust represent the fragility of human nature. She saw that Catholic religion as a world of politics. Her saying,” My skin was dust. Dust my lips, Dust the dirty spoons on the end of my feet” is a kind of her skepticism about her religion.
Sister Leopolda lies in front of other sisters to avoid punishment and dishonor. Also, Marie herself is dishonest by being blended by selfish interests and desires. In other words, there is no confession. Marie and the Sisters know that the faith is the most important virtue of Catholic. Furthermore, Marie knew that the nuns are the people who should be stand in vanguard
