Sister Aloysius: Play Analysis

Improved Essays
I do not think Sister Aloysius’s actions would be different if she were the principal at a secular school because I honestly think that a secular school principal would demonstrate some of the same actions Sister Aloysius did. Principals base their actions on what they think needs to be done about a situation; however, some of those actions are not the best way to handle things. In a principal’s mind, their number one job is to protect the students in the school from harm, either in the school or outside of it because those dangerous situations affect not just their education, but also their whole life. Students and teachers might think that what the principal is doing is unfair and that the actions should not be allowed, but what they might …show more content…
I think that none of those feelings would be brought up if something did not trigger Sister Aloysius about Father Flynn and as a result of these allegations; Sister Aloysius has to act on it, whether or not she is right. In the play, Sister Aloysius stated it was her job to, “… outshine the fox in cleverness!” (1.4). Sister Aloysius means that it is her duty as a principal to use her power to bring the truth out of someone and to play the game Father Flynn is playing r to hopefully beat him at his own game of manipulation and to also stop him in his tracks. To compare Sister Aloysius with a principal at a secular school, their actions would be surprisingly similar. Later in the play, Sister Aloysius told Father Flynn that she called the previous school he worked at to receive more information about him, which is what a principal or a superintendent might do to gain more knowledge about an employer with allegations towards them. However, Sister Aloysius did not do such a thing, she lied for a reaction that would tell her whether or not she should get rid of Father Flynn. Sister Aloysius told Sister James that, “ But if he had no such history, the lie wouldn’t have worked. His resignation was his confession. He was what I thought he was. And he’s gone” (1.9). Obviously, her thoughts about Father Flynn was right; furthermore, she had to take some risks in order to

Every person has had a traumatic past or an unfortunate event that has affected them one way or another; all have a different way of coping, and for Tennessee Williams it was writing. One of his better known plays,“A Streetcar Named Desire”, is a play constructed of pieces of his past childhood. The play is constructed of symbolism, aggressive diction, and conflict to be as a stage for William’s broken, beaten down mind. Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi; he had two siblings and his mother and father- a full house. Though it may seem like he had a complete undamaged family, life wasn’t easy for him.…

The first signs of her ignorance are shown when Father Flynn metaphorically refers to Sister Aloysius as a “dragon” (film). Sister James, who is oblivious to the severity of the remark, is quick to laugh. In the wake of blindly trusting Father Flynn’s good intentions, she violates the hierarchy of the Church by mocking her superior. Through the wavering of her support between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn, James’ loyalty becomes questionable. At one point she trusts Aloysius enough to tell her about Father Flynn’s interest in Donald Muller.…

The Sparrow On Friday, November 18, 2016, my wife and I saw the 7:30 showing of The Sparrow, a play written by Chris Matthews, Jake Minton, and Nathan Allen. The play is about a high school girl (Emily) returning to her former school after a tragic accident in the second grade, in which she was the only survivor, forced her to move and attend a different school. Eventually it is revealed that Emily has super powers when she saves the popular cheerleader (Jenny) from falling from the school’s rafters. Although this makes her loved by the students and teachers alike, a tryst with a popular male teacher (Mr. Christopher) fuels a jealous rage from Jenny, leading to Emily attacking Jenny with her powers. It is then revealed that Emily caused the…

This could also show that Flynn wants to get closer to the boys for an ulterior motive. During the beginning of the book, Sister Aloysius starts to become skeptical of Father Flynn. While talking with Sister James, Aloysius states, “He’s taken an interest”, (Shanley 20). Sister Aloysius is insinuating that Father Flynn has become interested in reasons besides wanting to help them. Since there are many reasons proving his guilt and countless ways to disprove his innocence, Father Flynn is…

The play I would pick that would be centered on the life of Theseus would be focused on the myth of him and the Minotaur. I feel like this is a good myth for a tragedy because there is a small number of characters at play, chiefly Theseus, his father Aegeus, the Minotaur itself, King Minos’s daughter Ariadne, and Daedalus who helps Theseus defeat the labyrinth. This small character list would fit the need for only three actors. I also think this particular myth has a lot of the features needed for a Greek tragedy as there is the needed feminine and masculine elements with Theseus and his new lover Ariadne. And to a more psychological level the conflict between Theseus and Minotaur which can hint at the animalistic nature of man fighting against…

Gossip Girl (CW, 2007-2012) is a drama television series about a group of fictional wealthy teenagers living on the Upper East Side in New York City. It is based off of a book series by Cecily Von Ziegesar. Though the characters all attend the same prep school, the show mostly focuses on what they do in their non-academic lives. The drama portrayed in this series is more extreme than other comparable teen drama shows, such as The O.C or 90210. This is due to the controversial topics that are included in each episode, such as pregnancy scares, suicide attempts, drug addictions, and affairs.…

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…

Three Sisters, by Anton Chekhov, directed by Rick Lombardo is the 2nd required performance for this semester and could not have been better. The Kennesaw State University production of Three Sisters was phenomenal and the undergraduate students who performed portrayed the Russian characters very well. I am usually not too impressed when it comes to plays performed by students but this production has me wanting to go to every Kennesaw State production. The women who played the three sisters; Olga, Masha, and Irina had me believing I was in the Fox Theatre surrounded by an enormous audience. They made this production feel as though it were professional.…

Lucy McCormick, of ‘GET IN THE BACK OF THE VAN’ (GITBOTV), influenced my practice through her solo workshop and subsequent conversations because I found her style and attitude towards creative work particularly stimulating and we share an enthusiasm for pushing theatrical boundaries. Her approach demonstrates that, “the question of boundaries and extremes is always in the room” (McCormick, 2014). In our workshop on ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ Lucy got one of my classmates, Laura, to chew up cucumber and then spit it into bread. I was aware of the process involved and, of course, ate the cucumber sandwiches, to the vocal displeasure of the audience. Laurence was unwilling to eat but was encouraged to by my response.…
