Sissela Bok said, “While all deception requires secrecy, all secrecy is not meant to deceive”(Bok 7). When I was little, I took this quote by Sissela Bok as an inspiration. I was in the assumption that even though I was making a mistake by deceiving, I was not doing an erroneous thing. I’m recounting a situation that had occurred when I was in third grade in India. When I received my report card, I chose to hide it from my parent because I didn’t earn good grades. Later, I came to realize that I made the wrong decision. From then on, I came to a conclusion that I should never deceive myself or others unless in the case of extreme situations. It was a transparent, sunny day in Hyderabad, India. The time was 4:00 PM. My day was a torrid one. I had forgotten my homework at home, and the teachers at the …show more content…
I felt really dismal. After hearing the lecture from my sister, I learned that it was not worth committing a big mistake of deceiving my mother for such a small issue. My sister’s words made me realize that deceiving my mom was never going to be the perfect resolution to the problem. I realized that by deceiving, I was only making my mom elated for a brief period of time, as she will find out eventually, because it’s obvious that in a scenario like this, any curious mother will call the school to find out about the results. I also learned from my sister that it’s better to be honest than to lie for personal reasons as I was simply making an excuse to benefit myself as I was making an excuse that if I don’t lie to mom about my report cards, I will face consequences and she will be angry. My sister’s words have also made me aware of the fact that any mom will be more unhappy if she finds that her child committed two mistakes. I came to a self-realization that in the process of correcting a mistake of not achieving good grades, I ended up making another mistake of
