Many people say that Sir Walter was looking for a city of gold, but instead he was actually looking for a gold mine (McCarthy 27). Raleigh and his men landed in Trinidad in 1595. While they were there they captured a Spanish Conquistador named Berrio who had spent his whole life looking for the gold city (Aronson 126-127). After a long journey of looking for gold and fighting Spaniards Sir Walter Raleigh returned home to England on June 14, 1595 (McCarthy 29). He later said that even if he did find a city of gold he would eventually destroy it (Aronson 142). After Sir Walter returned home the Spanish ambassador insisted that the death sentence that King James issued Sir Walter for high treason be carried out (¨Sir Walter¨). After years of exploration Sir Walter Raleigh was executed. Sir Walter even refused to wear a blindfold while he was being executed he even told the executioner to hurry up and do it.
