Walter Raleigh was born in Devon England in 1554 (Aronson 13). His parents were not very wealthy and Walter was not expected to to inherit anything of value (14). Even though he did not come from wealth Sir Walter Raleigh would later become a well known English explorer. Sir Walter was one of the bravest English explorers to ever live.
Walter first appeared in history when he enrolled at Oriel College in 1568. He was a very tall man for his day he was said to be over six feet tall. Walter was a brilliant student but he was short on money so he left college and went to France to fight for the Protestant cause (Aronson 21). He left France and headed back to England in 1574 (23). Walters half brother Sir Humphrey Gilbert was given the first patent to establish colonies in America by Queen Elizabeth (Aronson 14). Raleigh left out on his first adventure in 1578 he was headed for Plymouth (39). The intentions of his first adventure was to find a warmer place for the colonists in America to stay. Instead of finding a new place for the colonists Sir Walter Raleigh went to Ireland to fight for new territory in 1580 (Aronson 41). After returning home from the war Sir Walter and his men set out to discover a new land in America on April 27, 1584. They landed on the outer banks of North Carolina and claimed the land for England (61-62). After exploring the new land Raleigh and his men named it Virginia in honor of the virgin Queen Elizabeth. Raleigh and his men also brought two natives back home with them, their names were Menteo and Wanchese (63-64). Many people say that Sir Walter was looking for a city of gold, but instead he was actually looking for a gold mine (McCarthy 27). Raleigh and his men landed in Trinidad in 1595. While they were there they captured a Spanish Conquistador named Berrio who had spent his whole life looking for the gold city (Aronson 126-127). After a long journey of looking for gold and fighting Spaniards Sir Walter Raleigh returned home to England on June 14, 1595 (McCarthy 29). He later said that even if he did find a city of gold he would eventually destroy it (Aronson 142). After Sir Walter returned home the Spanish ambassador insisted that the death sentence that King James issued Sir Walter for high treason be carried out (¨Sir Walter¨). After years of exploration Sir Walter Raleigh was executed. Sir Walter even refused to wear a blindfold while he was being executed he even told the executioner to hurry up and do it. Sir Walter Raleigh was a brave man all the way up until he died
