Police actively get involved in community projects and talks to children in schools to try and build a bond and gain some respect from those who may see the Police as a negative due to the involvement some members of their family have had. A development of the Police is the involvement within the Gay communities. Being Gay is no longer a barrier to joining the Police. The public of this time seem too responded to this action by the Police with great respect, however there are still some who disagree with the Police becoming open to all.
Principle 8 - “Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.”
Sir Robert Peels Police were designated thief catchers this was their primary role. Their function was to be a visible deterant, They had to remain calm and quiet, reserve judgment as this was for others to decide if a person was guilty or not. They had to keep their temper under duress but be bold and take control of a situation should the need arise.
