One of the main themes that were intertwined between a lot of the texts we read was bravery. Most people know what bravery is and what is means but do we really understand it and why it is important to have? In this English course I learned more then just information from the historical texts we read, I learned that being brave and standing up for your self can get you very far in life. The main texts that stood out to me that exemplified this the most were Beowulf, Sir Galwin and the Green Knight, Paradise Lost, and Franklin’s Tale, that is why I have put them on my Medal of Bravery. Bravery is not something that can be taught from one person to another, it is already buried in that person, they just have to know how to use it. Beowulf was a very brave leader; he was able to put his life on the line for his people. He battled against Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon even …show more content…
The bravery he had was a little different then Beowulf’s because at first he was very scared of the Green Knight and didn’t want to take the challenge, but he soon found his bravery and took the challenge from King Arthur. His braveness died back down after he chopped off the Green Knight’s head because it didn’t kill him like he thought it would. Gawain was brave enough to seek his destiny and met up with the Green Knight to receive the blow that he gave to the Green Knight a year before. The knight barely gave him a tap on the third feint, because he was untruthful about the girdle, but nothing else. “This is the sign of sore loss that I have suffered there for the cowardice and converting that I came to there; This is the badge of false faith that I was found in there” (2507-2509). Gawain was brave enough to wear the girdle on his arm as a reminder of his failure. The knights in Arthur’s court join him to support him and his bravery to accept the challenge offered by the Green

One of the characteristics that Beowulf had like an Anglo-Saxon Hero was his bravery. He didn’t have any fear of going head to head with different creatures that he battled. For example, Beowulf said, “I drove five great giants into chains… hunting monsters out of the ocean.” (p.50). He conquered these massive and difficult tasks without fleeing away or refusing to do them.…

Not only must the hero has bravery, but also enough strength to use their bravery. Once they have mastered both of those elements they have courage. Beowulf shows courage throughout the epic poem, much like Rescorla showed courage when others froze in fear. Both warriors showed courage on and off the battlefield. Beowulf showed courage off the battlefield by reassuring others that he would take the enemy down.…

Sir Gawain shows his valor and courage in battle when he is faced with many difficult tasks and decisions. When the Green Knight comes to the castle offering his game to the knights, Sir Gawain says “I’ll beseech you, sire. Let this game be mine” (page 239). One sees Sir Gawain’s valour when he asks the King to allow him to accept the Green Knight's proposal. This pride goes against the humbleness that Sir Gawain holds within himself. He volunteers in place of King Arthur because he feels as though he needs to prove his worth within Arthur’s court. Gawain believes that “Were I not your nephew my life would mean nothing” (356). This shows that he feels the need to prove that his position was gained not just by nepotism but by knighthood and chivalry. This difference of motivation between the two heroes still leads to the one thing that they are both trying to prove: their loyalty to their…

    Beowulf Qualities

Because of his strength, courage and honor, Beowulf exhibits all the necessary characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon epic hero. He introduces himself to Hrothgar, and claims that “[His people] have seen [his] strength themselves”(Canto 4 line 151). His strength was self-claimed but not untrue, as he proves his strength later on in the epic poem. His courage and bravery show when he faces Grendel, as he “took off the helmet and handed his attendant / the patterned sword”(Canto 10 lines 672-673), determining that wielding any kind of weapon or protection would make the battle far too easy. Impulsive and somewhat irresponsible moves like this prove his bravery and solidify his heroic status.…

Beowulf embodies all that is good with his superior heroic qualities; he exuberates generosity along with a strong sense of confidence while fighting against his antagonists. Although Beowulf faces many challenges throughout the story, none of these conflicts are associated with humans, showing how he stands with humanity and wants to provide people with a sense of security through his fighting. On the other hand, Grendel, his mother, and the dragon represent the evil in the epic poem. Beowulf’s victories over Grendel and his mother show the extent to which the power of goodness can defeat evil. Even though Beowulf was killed by the dragon at the end, his heroic death fulfills his actions and role as a leader.…
