Sir John Hawkins was England's first slave trader. In 1562 Both Sir John Hawkins and Sir Francis Drake sailed from Barbican in Plymouth with three ships and violently kidnapped about 400 slaves,later trading them in the west indies. The article “British Surgeon Describes the Treatment of Slaves during the Middle Passage (Excerpts),” is an article of excerpts from a first-person account book, An Account of The African Slave Trade on the Coast of Africa (1788) by Alexander Falconbridge, thus making it a reliable source for the described time period of transatlantic slave trade. There is no better individual to recount on this information, besides a slave themselves. Falconbridge was a surgeon on the traveling slave ships and spent a lot of time with the slaves in their quarters. He “frequently went down among [the slaves]” to perform his job as it was necessary and “soon after fell sick of the same [illnesses]” due to the large number of slaves who attracted illnesses (Falconbridge). Bacon’s rebellion was a fortified fight that was known to eventually lead to the use of slaves instead of indentured servants. Two declarations were written by each man, arguing their side of the story and stating what would be done if the other did not submit. In the two passages, both men mention his Majesty, they were attempting to be in the Crown’s favor. By carefully examining Governor Berkley’s Declaration and Nathaniel Bacon’s declaration it is seen that Nathaniel Bacon throws many accusations at Gov. Berkeley, Gov. Berkeley responds with a list of reasons for his actions, and that behind the scenes both men are trying selfishly to grow their own wealth. John Gibbs St. Clair Drake was an African American sociologist born 2 January 1911, in Suffolk Virginia. St. Clair Drake was raised by his father, a Southern Baptist preacher in a multi-racial neighborhood. The St. Clair Drakes moved northward to Pittsburg in 1914, as a large population of African Americans from the south did the same. While in Pittsburg, St. Clair Drake lived in a middle-class setting, with access to more than enough reading material to form a long-lasting habit of reading and thrusting him into the world of academia. Slaves were stacked on top of each other during the packing process. Taken from their homes and family’s straight into the bondage of enslavement, slaves were whipped and beaten until they complied. One slave ship physician, Dr. Thomas Trotter, described the slaves as “locked ‘spoonways’ and locked to one another” (Document C). Slaves were chained together in the hold to prevent possible rebellions against their white abductors. Ironically, the enlightenment was also the peak of African slave trade in Europe and the New World, with the transatlantic slave trade beginning in 1551.
