Sir Francis Drake Research Paper

Ferdinand Magellan was the first to circumnavigate around the world in 1522. He was a Spanish explorer that sailed from 1519-1522. He enlisted under the Spanish King Manuel, and set forth his project for a trip around the world. The expedition set sail August 10, 1519. Magellan was killed in April 1521 in the Philippines, but they had already reached the eastern edge of the known world, and his men completed the voyage to Spain. The voyage proved that the earth is round. Sir Francis Drake was an English explorer. He was actually the third person to complete circumnavigation in 1580. His expedition started November 15, 1577. There were some differences between Ferdinand Magellan and Sir Francis Drake expeditions. One thing that was different between these two explorers were their ships. Magellan had five ships included in his expedition. They were called Concepcion, Trinidad, Santiago, San Antonio, and Victoria. Among these, Victoria completed the journey from Spain to the Philippines. Sir Francis Drake had one ship called "The Golden Hind", she was originally known as the Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578. Their routes were also different. Magellan sailed down the east coast of South America. Sir Francis Drake’s route circumnavigated the Earth from England to Africa then to South America through the Straits of Magellan. He proceeded towards the north along the South American and Central American coast then reached west from California. Some challenges that Sir Francis Drake faced were angry Spaniards. He was a victim of religious persecution. It was due to his involvement in insignificant crimes. The Spaniards were also trying to kill him because he stole most of their boats and resources.
