Not exactly the most illustrious or morally right way to begin his life as an adventurer. After conflicts with Spanish ships in the area Drake began a career in piracy, attacking Spanish settlements in the Caribbean from around 1570-1573 (“Francis Drake, Sir” Historic). After illegally pirating for several years, Drake received a privateering license from Queen Elizabeth I, legitimizing his career for he was now backed by the English government (Lockley). Soon after receiving his license, Sir Francis Drake was appointed mayor of Plymouth and served from 1581-1585 (Chwieroth). His brief political career was cut short as was soon called again to serve his country in the war against the Spanish, so from 1585-1588 Drake fought as Chief Naval Advisor for the English (Chwieroth). Drake’s most famous achievement was that he was the first person to circumnavigate, or travel all the way around in one trip (Lockley). Sir Francis Drake’s hatred for the Spanish and his lust for personal wealth led him to become one of the greatest privateers ever. Drake’s humble beginnings led to him becoming a national hero of England and one of the most influential men of his time.
