“The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.” by Dante Alighieri. This shows a little into Dante’s thinking as he ranked moral failures through his structure of hell. In Dante’s Inferno there are nine different circle or levels of hell. In these circle there are different punishments for the different sins people commit throughout their life. The worst the sin is that you commit, the lower in hell you go and the worst your punishment in hell is. To fully understand why he ranked certain sins above the others, we must learn some background information on him.

Bolgia 1 is where the panderers and seducers march in separate lines in opposite directions while being whipped by demons. Bolgia 2 is where the flatterers also exploited other people, this time using language. They are steeped in human excrement, Bolgia 3 is for those who committed simony. These sinners are placed head-first in holes in the rock, with flames burning on the soles of their feet. Bolgia 4 is for the sorcerers, astrologers, and false prophets. This group of sinners place here have their heads twisted around on their bodies backward, Bolgia 5 is where the corrupt politicians are immersed in a lake of boiling pitch. The sixth Bolgia is dedicated to the hypocrites who are listlessly walking along wearing gilded lead cloaks. Bolgia 7 is where the thieves are assigned. The thieves punishment is wrestle various snakes. Bolgia 8 is where the fraudulent advisers or evil counsellors are sent for their sins. In Bolgia 8, the evil counsellors are concealed within individual flames. These are not people who simply gave false advice, but people who used their position to advise others to engage in fraud. Bolgia 9 is for the Sowers of Discord. In the ninth Bolgia, a sword-wielding demon hacks at the Sowers of Discord, dividing parts of their bodies as in life they divided others. Bolgia 10 is the final Bolgia, various sorts of falsifiers such as alchemists, counterfeiters, perjurers, and impostors who are a disease on society are sent there and they are afflicted with different types of
