Sino-American Relations

Sino-American relations have been stressed since Mao Zedong established the People’s Republic of China in 1945. The U.S. and Chinese conflict over communism led to lack of communication until Ping-Pong Diplomacy in 1971. Since then, China-U.S. trade relations formed with the U.S.-China Relations Act of 2000 and these relations have grown, but there has been conflict as well. Discussion over the environment has also occurred between the two nations, as was seen between President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping during the 2014 Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. With the election of Donald Trump and his shift from old style rhetoric when it comes to foreign policy, the near future of political relations remains unpredictable. However, both nations need each other to succeed. America is dependent on China due to the massive amount of debt, and both nations benefit immensely from trade relations. Environmentally, these two nations need to cooperate if global warming is to be solved. The U.S. and China are also major world powers, so if war is to be avoided both countries will have to maintain peaceful relations with one another. China is a country whose population is over three times as big as the United Sates. This means that for anyone here in the United Sates willing to lower their carbon emissions there are countless people in China who are going to offset their actions. Another thing to take into account is that China is a communist country, a country in which the Government controls everything the people can or cannot do. However, Pollan still argues against Michael Specters statement “Personal choices, no matter how virtuous, cannot do enough. It will also take laws and money.”…

Historian Evelyn Goh argues, from the Chinese perspective; that China, by inviting Nixon, intended not to form a de facto alliance but rather a détente, ideally to prevent conflict with both powers simultaneously. At the same time, China was also not prepared to rely solely on the US. This could be demonstrated by Zhou Enlai agreeing with the US that USSR is implementing a policy of expansionism, while simultaneously stating that China was willing to improve its relationship with Moscow. Goh argues that normalization of relations was for China to ‘concentrate on their main Soviet adversary’. In other words, forming a trilateral balance of power in the…

Despite the obvious loss of jobs in America in the beginning, due to there no longer being a need for certain productions many would argue that this was an excellent decision that led to lower prices and has yet to fail America but, what happens if it were to fail America? If for some reason China and America were to get into some form of a feud, America would be thousands of dollars in debt to China and that would not be so easily forgiven as it is today. To accompany this nightmare, prices in America would come to an ultimate high that most consumers…
