In both “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Edwards and “The Minister's Black Veil” by Hawthorne has sinners in it. They’re both similar because everyone is always sinning. It doesn’t matter if they have on a Black Veil or they are in the hands of God because sin will never stop.
The difference between both is the reasoning. In Hawthorne “The Minister’s Black Veil” everyone is hiding a secret sin but the Minister shows everyone that he has one with the veil (492-493, 303-304). …show more content…
At lines 101-103 he says, “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them, and would fain lay hold on them, and swallow them up; fire pent up in their own hearts is struggling to break out: And they have no interest in any Mediator, there are no means within reach that can be any security to them.” Edwards is trying to scare the people into repentance so God wouldn't release them into hell and fall to their own torture. He says this to them with a determined and a forceful way. Hawthorne developed his theme also with an archaic way but not aggressively. He uses a third person omniscient point of view and at lines 275-276 he says, “There is an hour to come when all of us shall cast aside our veils.” He’s explaining that everyone has a secret sin even if they don’t have a black veil and they will have to show everyone when the time comes.
Edwards and Hawthorne are showing their ways on how people should tell about and repent for their sins. Hawthorne style has an easier way of telling people and giving them time to be able to repent for their sins. But Edwards has a more effective style. His is aggressive on everyone so he can get them to repent now before God decides to banishes them to
