“It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them” was drilled into the minds of the citizens from the time that they were in the Home of Infants (21). By drilling this statement into the heads of the youth, it creates an idea of sin that cannot be replaced. When a citizen of the community begins to feel they are committing this sin, they attempt to stop it and they don’t let it show because they do not wish to be alienated by their “family”. “We were just like our brothers then” implying that Equality 7-2521 are now completely different from society and their “brothers” in ways that society would frown upon (20). However, this statement is true, Equality 7-2521 is different from his brothers and is therefore committing a sin that is considered unforgivable. By being able to understand lessons faster, he was considered superior to the rest of his brothers so, he therefore must be contained and punished otherwise he would disrupt the whole idea of the societal norms. Society has a few selected chosen leaders that are chosen because they will protect the ideas of this society. In this society, nobody is greater than other citizens do the job that is assigned to because the Council of Vocations thinks it will best suit them and to oppose the Council of Vocations is a rare and punishable task. When Equality 7-2521 walked into the room and introduced himself the World Council made a mockery of him. “A Street Sweeper walking in upon the Word Council of Scholars!
