The basic function of the human heart is to circulate blood around the body. It functions with the right ventricle, which pumps blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle, which pumps oxygenated blood throughout the whole body. Some children are born with a single ventricle defect, which means that they only have one ventricle working. There are three types of medical deficiencies attributed to a single ventricle defect: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Pulmonary Atresia/Intact Ventricular Septum, and Tricuspid Atresia.
