Over time there has been a significant change in the “traditional” average family. In the United States today it is proven that the number of children with unmarried parents had increased greatly over time. Set aside from the families with now unmarried parents there has also been in incline in the number of single parent homes. Unlike like in the old days there has also been a big change in parents, married or not, now we see mothers spending more time at paid jobs than at home. Utopias are over exaggerated predictions of what will happen in the future. It is shown in George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World that their predictions of American families losing family values are coming true by the increase in single parents …show more content…
George Orwell’s 1985 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World show many exaggerated predictions some closer than others. Their predictions of Americans using family values is coming close to their exaggerations. In 1984, the Party kept their people in control by restraining them from having emotions and feelings in relationships sexual or not. To keep this from happening, “ All marriages between Party members had to be approved by a committee appointed for the purpose, and – though the principle was never clearly stated – permission was always refused if the couple concerned gave the impression of being physically attracted to one another.”( Orwell ). The only purpose of marriage in 1984 was to reproduce which was looked at as a duty and an obligation to woman as katherine called it “our duty to the Party” (Orwell 67). Couples in 1984 did not get married out of love, they did not really have any emotions for each other their only purpose was to make babies for the Party to use as their little spies. Furthermore, in America today it is shown single parents homes are affecting many children, “ one- third of American children - a total of 15 million- are being raised without a father [and] nearly Five million live without a mother”( “The” n.pag). Just like Winston’s dad disappeared and nothing was said of it these children are going through the same situation by only having one parent. Most children with one parent are being raised by a single mother who provides for the family as a mother and a father. It is these mothers duties to bring food to the table and shelter above their head whitch was traditionally the father’s responsibility. In addition, a report released by the Census Bureau shows there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the U.S. And of those parents there are 22 million children with a single parent ( Wolf n.pag.). Over the years there is seen to be more single parent homes. This results in seeing many children seen with one parents, which has now become a normality. Back in the day if a child only had one parent it was assumed the father was at war or one of them had died of a tragic sickness. America today is quick to assume one of the parents has left the family because of the normality it is turing into. Lastly, in America divorce rates have also gone up causing the increase of single parent
