R.S. Qwynn, in the fiction headnotes section of Literature: A Pocket Anthology, defines and discusses the various elements of fiction. Short stories began by the influence of Italian novella. People trying to escape countries told novellas, which included stories such as frame tales. The nineteenth century is when short stories became a known literary genre because of the wide literature environment. Edgar Allan Poe was a very influential short story writer, with his idea of single effect. Most of Poe’s stories were out of the ordinary and known as tales. He mainly focused on the fantasy and horror genres producing formula fiction stories and sometimes pulp fiction stories. As for how short stories are written today, that did not start begin development until the realism movement, a time period that greatly affected literature. Later in the nineteenth century naturalism came into effect impacting the study and understanding of everyday human …show more content…
It begins with the protagonist, which is normally the main character, and what they do throughout the course of the story. At some point during the story the main character has conflict with another character in the story known as the antagonist. There are also different characteristics of each character. Some characters are considered flat characters when they do not have a lot to their personality and they are kind of boring. While as some characters have multiple personalities that the writer gets more in depth with and are called round characters. Within every character they are also labeled either a static or dynamic character, depending on their development and motivation throughout the story. A character is static when their personality does not change through the course of the story. While a character that is dynamic goes through some sort of internal change.
