Singing Psalm Analysis

Introduction The book of Psalms was a compilation of poems that were sung in worship sessions. Singing Psalms was one way that helped the reader to understand the message being spoken. The scriptures are the witnesses of people of the Old Testament. Among others, David was one of the authors of the Psalms. This book is identified as the wisdom book. We will all need wisdom at some point in our life’s journey and Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes can assist us with knowledge and understanding to get through our Godly walk. Being a shepherd himself, David knows all too well what it takes for a shepherd to care of sheep. Trouble and hardships drew David into a place where he called upon his own Shepherd for help and he knew that he would be led into peace and safety. David says it is better to trust in the Lord, and do good. The bible states that by doing this, it will surely help stop the fretting and bring about dependence solely on God’s protection and support. When our focus is to do good or please God, there is not time for complaining. David uses the picture of God being the Shepherd and they are his sheep. The ancient people understand that sheep are totally dependent upon their Shepherd to provide for them. The song’s message tells that God can be trusted as he is the Shepherd who knows what his sheep need. David compels them to practice doing well that is well-pleasing and live in this condition so they can dwell in safety and quietness. Feeding on His wisdom and knowledge will ensure stability. David’s song of worship assures life, hope and the promises of God. The word “land” as the land of promise-the country given to the people of God. It is in this land that they receive from the hand of God. He needed someone to protect him from harm and dangers. God had revealed to David his goodness and love. I am like David, who makes mistakes and find myself in a predicament, at times. I sometimes lose faith and wonder how I got there. David wrote his experience and lessons learnt, in this scripture, so that I can apply in my everyday living. It brings me peace and confidence, to know that the only one thing or person I can trust is Jesus, my Shepherd. I love that fact that because I am His sheep Jesus knows what I need and will protect me always. I should never feel that I lack in any way, as I am one of God’s own.
