Singin’ in the Rain is a classic movie that has a great appeal and I think one way the film achieves greatness is through its effective use of color. It’s not an overly vibrant film but the use of bright colors throughout the film emphasizes the glamour of Hollywood, which is a large component of this film. The colors also add a dreamlike sense to the movie, which I think works to highlight the difference between the fantasy of acting/Hollywood and the reality of life. By incorporating rain and repetition into this passage, Jhumpa Lahiri is able to better develop the character of Moushumi and the relationship that she has with Gogol. Right before this passage, Moushumi begins to have an affair with her old love interest, Dimitri Desjardins. The affair continues for many weeks and they begin to meet every Monday and Wednesday at Dimitri’s apartment. However, Gogol is completely unaware of the affair and does not suspect a thing. Therefore, because Lahiri uses rain in this passage, it gives insight to the storm forming in Moushumi and Gogol’s marriage.…

The Pursuit of Happiness “Run From Taxi Scene” In the film The Pursuit of happiness directed by Gabriele Muccino, during a sequence of events in which the protagonist, Christopher, does not have the money to pay the taxi for a ride thus he has to run from the taxi driver who proceeds to chase him. This sequence uses several film techniques to add to the effect of this moment with the intention of showing what challenges Gardner will have to face in order to complete his internship. This Intention, I believe, is to display the beginning of gardner's decent. The techniques that are used to achieve this intention are the location, symbolism, the acting and the costume in this sequence.…

The relationship between father and son is something complex and fragile. It is generally built from childhood, a very tender point in life, and in some cases the father chooses to shirk his responsibilities rather than be an active presence in their child’s life. This is an incredibly popular topic in all facets of media, and is the subject of “All Over but the Shoutin”, by Rick Bragg. The narrator’s feelings in the piece are quite obviously complicated, and the reader sees him grapple with them and, in the end, come out of it more confused than when he started. This memoir explores the legacy of childhood animosity, and how that animosity can be a burden all the way into adulthood and trying to forgive and forget is much easier said than…

In the fifth line, Brooks declares that she “[wants] to go in the back yard now,” representing how she has now grown up enough and is ready to go out on her own. In the sixth line, she says that she may want to go “down the alley,” illustrating how she has become more rebellious than before and wants to experience even more than she did before. In the first stanza, Brooks only wanted to “peek at the back,” but now she wants to go in the back and go down the alley. According to Floyd, “summertime” was the opening song written by George Gershwin for his folk opera porgy and Bess in 1935 which was an easy lullaby (218). Summertime was an aria and it is somewhat attributed to Ira Gershwin. The song became a well-liked hit and to a great extent recorded jazz standard and its lyrics written by Dubose Heyward who is the author of novel porgy. This song was been labeled as on the classics by many and to a large extent a xenophobic minstrel by others. Regardless of Gershwin’s good will, Floyd exemplifies that George’s work was contentious and was damned for its so-called orthodox representation of the black American life (219).…
