War with Sin “The Scarlet Letter” is a critique and a tragedy written Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Ticknor, Reed, and Fields in 1994. The story is based on what would commonly happen to those who committed adultery amongst the puritans of Boston during the colonization of the Americas. “The Scarlet letter” is dark, depressing, but is also very intriguing and mysterious. The main characters of “The Scarlet Letter” include Arthur Dimmesdale, a weak minded, pale, and easily tempted minister, Hester Prynne, the hardworking and loyal lover of Dimmesdale, Pearl, the lively and imp-like child of Dimmesdale and Prynne, and Roger Chillingsworth, the quiet and sinister husband of Hester Prynne. The evidence is obviously the child, named Pearl, Hester Prynne gave birth to. The Elders of Boston, including the governor of Boston and Dimmesdale, offer a deal to Prynne, if she tells them who the father of Pearl is, they will take away the scarlet letter “A” that has been placed on the bosom of her dress. Prynne refuses to tell who the father. The Elders give up put her back in jail and ask the physician Roger Chillingsworth to examine both the mother and the child. Chillingsworth asks his wife who the father is and she answered saying that she cares too much for her secret lover tell him of his identity. Chillingsworth responds by answering that he probably knows who he is. The story goes from there that Hester Prynne begins to raise the playful Pearl, while Dimmesdale seemingly grows ill and asks Chillingsworth to move into his house with him to help cure him. A few weeks later, Chillingsworth looks at Dimmesdale’s bare chest, while he slept, and discovered and “A” mark over his heart thus revealing that Dimmesdale is the mystery father and lover. As the story goes on Dimmesdale grows weaker and starts to suspect Chillingsworth of his mind games. One night, Dimmesdale goes to the platform, where Hester Prynne was accused of adultery, and stands on it looking at the night sky. Hester and Pearl join him.
