In nursing and many other careers, employees are often thrown into situations that they have never encountered before and it can be a frightening experience. During this time, most individual’s minds start racing, hearts start pounding, and start sweating. This is where knowledge and experience come into play and this is where it makes or breaks the situation. During this time, simulations come into hand and can help those who have never experienced minute making decisions before.

Studies have shown by Rauen (2004) that using simulation helps excel skills that critical care nurses use and requires the nurse to think on their feet. Rauen (2004) says that simulations have been used in other careers and outside of hospitals that it “provides

During this simulation, we had to assess the patient, call the doctor, and identify the vital signs and the lab work. The patient started off feeling find but a little strange, he had just had and abdominal surgery and it was bothering him. As the assessment progressed, the patient’s vitals began to rise, he began to perfuse more and more, with a change in his level of consciousness. When we noticed his change in consciousness that’s when we as students began to panic a little. We called the doctor and were given orders for antibiotics and fluids to be given to the patient. At the end of this simulation we the students agreed that it was easy to notice the septic shock due to the assessment and vitals, but what was challenging was knowing what to do, if it be call the doctor, what medicine we could give right away and get orders later and the exact lab test to draw and look at. This simulation experience was very good to introduce us into what to expect when a patient goes into shock, how to get ahold of the doctor and how to follow orders from a phone …show more content…
As we entered the room and received the brief report, we all knew from class and clinical experience that the patient was in heart failure and had fluid on his lungs. We started our assessment and began looking at the lab results that correlated with heart failure. During this time we called the doctor to let her know the lab results and to find out what medicine and orders we needed. The instructor had to help us identify the medicine to give and it was up to us to find the correct dosage. From our class experience we were able to calculate the dosages and give them correctly, the difficult part of this simulation was identifying the correct medicine that was needed to be given. At the end of this simulation we talked about how we felt it went and agreed that it went easier than the septic shock simulation, but it showed that we were not familiar with the drugs that needed to be

Furthermore, in a pre-hospital environment the process of applying knowledge and skills is a key part of a paramedic’s clinical role which often involves a chaotic and unpredictable environment. Throughout their decision making process, paramedics must continuously evaluate and decide the degree to which they are making the correct clinical decisions in relation to a particular patient. (Parson and O’Brien, 2013) Bledshoe et al (2007) wrote that paramedics are often required to formulate clinical decisions based on a number of options, often independently, and in order to do so, paramedics are required to use their clinical experience and knowledge to formulate a clinical decision focused on patient care. Furthermore, paramedics apply clinical experience and independently formulated decisions as they develop and implement a management…

Thirdly, you want to make a graphic representation of the current process and this is where you will derive the possible failure modes. (Cronrath et al., n.d.). By making a graphic representation of the steps in the current process, step by step, you can then branch off of each step and identify where potential failures could occur. In the scenario presented, there where opportunities for errors all along the way from the initial verbal order, to no verification of medication names or doses and down to the patient not being continuously monitored throughout the process and…

My responsibility for this workshop was to proceed with a handover of a patient to an intern (played by Dr. Michael Adamson). This was a particularly disasterous session. My performance was not only unfit within the scope of academic criteria, but was clearly short of acceptable for a real-world SBAR. During the reading of the scenario I was daunted by the task of having to SBAR report a patient to admission at a hostpital, based on information I was reading for the first time; my practice with the hand-over system was minimal prior to the session.…

Based on the interrogation of the literature, the proposed research question will be useful in guiding the implementation of a simulation nurse training program in the NICU in order to increase the practice of KMC. Based on the findings from all of these literature studies, with regard to the nurses’ knowledge of KMC, it is even clear that training opportunities should be developed to address misconceptions as well as disparity in knowledge of KMC (Solomons & Rosant, 2012).…

In the V Simulation there is many things I would have done differently. The three main things are referring back to the doctor’s orders, do a proper verbal assessment, and check the patient’s vitals. When I began to do the V simulation I went in having read everything however, there were many steps to be done to assess and to care for the patient and her wound. When I was doing the simulation I tried to remember everything that needed to be done and it caused much disorder in my care for the patient. When I did the verbal assessment my questions to the patient it had no order, if I were to redo the sim this is one of the main things I would try to better.…

Simulation is a flexible teaching method that can be adopted to meet both the programme requirements and students learning needs. A stimulated environment provides conducive learning that enables students to repetitively practice until competence is attained. One challenge my students had was course overload. With so much information in a short period of time they were unable to link the theory to the practical environment. As such, I have realized it was not the actual learning of the skills that was the problem for the students, it was the application of them.…

“Every single day you learn something new,” Nurse Medina says, “ and if you look at everything there is usually never a double moment.” Medina works in the Emergency Room (ER) at Lenox Hill Hospital where she experiences different situations that occur in the department. Nursing isn’t as simple as it sounds. Working twelve-hour shifts with different scenarios every day is arduous for the nurse practitioner that manages the ER. Working in the ER to save a life may sound a bit cliche, “But when you can really save a life that is worth saving what I mean of worth saving is that the person will have a good outcome.…

Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…
