The difference between correlation and causation is that correlation is a statistical measurement that describes the direction and size of a relationship between two or more variables. It is an action or occurrence that correlates with another. For example smoking is correlated with drinking alcohol but doesn’t cause alcoholism. Causation describes that one event happens because of a different event or a cause and effect relationship. It is an action or occurrence that can cause another. For example smoking causes an increase in the development of lung cancer, or jumping off of a cliff directly causes great physical damage.
