This is my critique for my simulated assessment for clinical skills. My clinical skills procedure was assisting with feeding, a skill that is essential in ensuring that patients are getting the right amount of nutrients needed to recover. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) (BAPEN 2003) is used in clinical areas to assess the nutrition needs of each individual, by using their body mass index (BMI: weight divided by height squared), whether they have lost any unplanned weight in the last six months and whether or not they have an acute disease which could cause loss of appetite the MUST score determines how at risk they are of malnutrition. I can see from my video that I also met the key areas of hand washing; I washed the back of my hands, the palms of my hands, in between the fingers, the sides, the finger tips, the thumb, and the wrists. The transmission of infection can be direct (person to person), indirect (one person contaminates an object that another person then touches and contaminates themselves) or droplet (through sneezing, coughing and sometimes by talking), by washing our hands in compliance with the five moments of hand hygiene (WHO 2006); before patient contact, before aseptic task, after bodily fluid exposure risk, after patient contact and after contact with patient surroundings, we are minimising the risk of infecting another person, object, or even ourselves. Alcohol hand gel/rub is only effective on “clean” hands, if the hands are visibly soiled then soap and water must be used. The NMC code (NMC 2008a) state that nurses must be competent in the hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment if they have to provide any form of physical care for a service user. During breaks and at the end of a shift, moisturiser should be applied to prevent skin breakages and acquiring contact dermatitis, during the colder season, gloves should be worn when the skin is exposed to the cold outside air.
