It went on as far as the eye could see. A long sea of white, with endless space, yet invisible at the same time, covered completely. The near end was where it all began, starting with greens and oranges and yellows and reds. By the middle, there were piles and piles of every variety, to be mixed and matched to your heart’s content. But, it was the finale that really amazed me, with its endless color, sparkles, and overflowing extravagance. I always skipped the finale, because I’m seriously, terribly, awfully, horribly, deathly allergic to nuts.
Us skiers, after a long morning on the slopes, needed to replenish our calories. We’d been on the mountain for hours, having so much fun with our jumps, dives, and falls. We’d wait in endless lines for a chairlift, but not even care because we were in the sun and having the time of our lives. But, once the clock struck 12:30, we and all the other skiers abandoned the mountain and instead piled into the restaurant to join the long lined at the buffet. Day after day, I went for the chicken fingers and fries, gliding past the greens and other vegetables, passing on the pasta, sliding past the sausage, and skipping over the steak. Some moms were forcing their kids to eat healthy food, but

I remember arriving at the Deer Valley clinic and seeing the doctor who looked like he was in a western movie, wearing cowboy boots, a leather vest, and a huge black hat. My mom was panicking, and screamed at the doctor that I appeared unconscious. He seemed a lot less panicked, and told her that it was because she had “overdosed me on Benadryl.” My mom wasn’t going to be convinced, and so made him run a million tests just to be sure. After them all, he was still sure. After a while, he sent me home, telling me I’d feel fine in the morning and telling my mom to stop feeding me

Throughout this entire article, “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko, Zinczenko tells his readers how we as a society shouldn’t put all of the blame for young adults and children getting fat on them. We need to put more of the blame in this situation on the fast food restaurants not the “eaters.” Zinczenko admits he was one of these kids, his father was out of the picture trying to fix his life, and his mom was having to work a full time job to pay the bills. So lunch and dinner for him was an option between McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza. He admits that times have still not changed much since then and still in today’s society these are the only options for younger people to get affordable meals that are left…

Paugh and Izquierdo looked at a study carried out by Oshs, Pontecorvo, and Fasulo and found out that Americans focus on nutritional lessons to get children to eat healthy food, but they also use this food as a reward, like dessert. Paugh and Izquierdo also looked at Wiggin’s study which highlighted the importance of examining family interactions about food and eating. This article analyzes everyday interactions at dinnertime and it shows that children negotiate and bargain for the unhealthy food that they would rather eat. In Paugh and Izquierdo’s research, they found that parents believe healthiness as eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep and managing stress.…

For the majority of my life before coming to Texas A&M, I knew that I had to figure out a way to get here. Getting a college education would be my escape route to deviate away from becoming a low income family like my mother and her previous generations. My mother did the best she could to take of her three children by herself, but like many single parent households she struggled to do so. Due to my mom being the sole bread winner, there was often not enough money to maintain our household. I remember many days when we were only able to eat one meal a day that consisted either of half a chicken sandwich shared between my sister and I, or just a pack of saltine crackers.…

The only defense that my children have is me. I am the buffer zone when it comes to anything that could be harmful or unhealthy to them. This includes the over indulgence of fast food. As a parent it is up to me to set the right example by choosing to cook healthy meals at home; “parents, particularly mothers, wield a significant impact on children’s consumption of a balanced diet and exposure to a variety of foods” (Bakir & Vitell, 2010, p. 301). Even though childhood obesity is on the rise to imply that the ethical responsibility falls on the food industry and their marketing tactics are unreasonable.…

From a young age, my parents have always enforced the idea of eating healthy constantly badgering me to eat my vegetables or have a piece of protein with my meals. Although I might not have understood why their reprimanding was important, over the course of these last few weeks in biology I have come to realize that having a sound diet in many ways encompasses what it means to be healthy and live life to its fullest. By actively moderating, recording, and learning about what I have been eating I can now clearly understand that my parents were right to encourage healthy eating in my home. My parent, specifically my mother, was always the one who cooked and influenced my healthy eating at a young age. When looking at my food logs for this…
