In the case study, Allison clearly demonstrated competence by maintaining an active lifestyle to cope with her stress. Not only did she much rather prefer working busy shifts, but she also participated in multiple sports and this is how she got her nickname ‘energizer bunny’. What stood out the most to me about her compassionate care was when she was caring for Mrs. Johnson. Caranto (2015) states that compassion is demonstrated when the nurse puts effort to understand what the patient may be experiencing (i.e. pain or discomfort), and also the experiences of the family. With that being said, Allison intervened efficiently when Mrs. Johnson’s condition worsened (i.e. blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturations, chest pain/discomfort). As Mrs Johnson stabilized, Allison validated Mrs Johnson going through tough times and respected her wishes to not have her family visit her right now due to relational factors. Allison forwarded this message to her family in a respectful and professional manner. The act of being present in a physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional manner through a caring practice is transformational (Caranto, 2015). Allison was committed to her role as a nurse on duty by providing best patient care to all her clients by remaining calm and professional at all times. When she noticed Mrs. Johnson’s vital signs and respiratory rate was abnormal, she immediately raised her head of bed. She was also present throughout her care with Mrs. Allison where she was communicating and respecting Mrs. Allison’s needs to enhance her patient care. Presence does not necessarily mean there must be a constant verbal communication between client and nurse, but even silence can be understood and healing when verbal communication may not seem to be appropriate (Caranto, 2015). The last attribute that Allison displayed was comportment, in which she was professional and truthful to the patient and their family by respecting the patient first and the disease second (Caranto, 2015). This was demonstrated when she related Mrs. Johnson to her mother and how if Allison’s mother was in the hospital, she would want to see her mother right away. This made her seek for options to try to get the family to meet Mrs. Johnson. When she finally was able to convince Mrs. Johnson to meet with her family, it put a smile on Allison’s face when Mrs. Johnson’s boys
