It is an addiction. A chemical called dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that affects motor skills, emotions, learning, and behavior, is released when a person drinks, gambles, or smokes (“Dopamine”). Similarly, it is also released when a person receives a “like” on a picture or a response to a text. Dopamine is highly addictive chemical. There are age restrictions put on activities such as drinking, gambling, and smoking by both the government and parents; ironically, there are no restrictions put on technology. This does not allow for children of this generation to develop proper coping mechanisms. Rather than turning to an adult or a peer with the stresses of adolescence, millennials turn to technology. They no longer create deep, meaningful relationships with those around them because of technology. This addiction has created a generation with low self-esteem that lacks social skills and have no coping mechanisms for stress. It is often said that “millennials (aka Generation Y) are great at social media (Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, Vimeo, and Periscope) but lack time tested social skills ( patience, humility, active listening, respect for parents, teachers, elderly)” (Lohia). As this generation grows older, individuals are going to become more socially awkward and less able to handle stress all due to technology (“Simon
