What Can Happen When Someone Is Given Too Much Power?

When you were a kid, you probably played games with your friends or siblings right? Simon Says, for example, is a game pretty that much anyone has played. One person is given the power to make others do whatever movement they want, but only if they say “Simon says” first. What if someone you really didn’t like was standing a bit too close to the left of someone? You could make the person to their right hit them just by saying “Simon says raise your left arm quickly”. It seems mean, but it’s a possibility. When given power people can sometimes react in a cruel, rude, and even violent manner. Why do they do this? What makes people act the way they do? In 1971, Philip Zimbardo asked himself

Although the story is designed to explain how fire and disease came to exist in the human world, there is also clear usage of power. Prometheus, a titan who for some unknown reason, along with his brother, Epimethius, was not sent to prison, saw how the humans suffered. They lived in caves, gelid, with no way to protect themselves, no means to build shelter, and no way to cook food, unlike how it was when Saturn was king. Prometheus had seen this and begged Jupiter, who was leader at the time, to give them fire. He had refused to use his power to give them flame out of fear. Prometheus then became determined to help the humans. While wandering the beach, he found a stalk of fennel, or a reed, with a dry hollow center filled with pith. He picked up the reed, held it up to the sun to catch the pith on fire, which would burn rather slowly, and then he hurried down to the humans and gave it to them, showing them how to make more. After he had done this, Prometheus showed them how to cook food, build shelters, and defend themselves. Humans came out of the caves they had lived in, and flourished with the new skills they had acquired. When Jupiter had found out about this, he became angry. He decided to let the humans keep their fire, but he wanted to …show more content…
Let’s take the music industry for example. Today, music has an impeccable impact on the media. There’s so many artists with huge influences, but with no real words. If they make good music and use their words to get a message across, wouldn't that make a good impact and be a good usage of their power? Sorority Noise wrote a song called “Using”, and in this song he talks about how he has horrible habits like smoking, but then as the song develops he talks about what he should do. The chorus says “I stopped wishing I was dead, learned to love myself before anyone else. Become more than just a burden, I know I’m more than worthy of your time”. That can influence someone to try and do the same thing if they look up to him. If someone who struggles with self hatred, for example where to hear that song and where to look up to that musician, the musician could use his power through his words to influence that person to work on their views on themselves. How about actors? If someone like Kevin Hart where to go on an environmental project where he helps clean highways, wouldn’t his fans also be influenced to clean up their streets? People who are famous are able to use their power in positive ways through their influences on the media. The problem is most don’t, but if they really want to they

There are many ways that people in positions of power influence society. Whether it’s someone who is a preacher like Jonathan Edwards that influence the behavior of their congregation, or sSomeone like Patrick Henry who used his position of wealth in Virginia to preach the idea of liberty from Britain in Colonial America. They all seem to have one thing in common, they all use rhetoric in some shape or form in their orations to their audiences. How Jonathan Edwards used rhetoric used was he heavily relied on pathos to influence the people in his church to stop sinning and start repenting. He said things like “You hang by a slender thread with flames of divine wrath flashing about it and ready every moment to burn it asunder.”…

Since the beginning of time, power is a force that has been desired and strived for, yet feared by many. Although it often leads to harm, power itself is not destructive; “Like money, power is indifferent in its usefulness to the person who possesses it” (Wilson). In George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and William Shakespeare 's, Macbeth, the desire to gain power and the fear of losing it, results in not only corruption but a malicious use of psychological manipulation and the demise of many.…

Too much pride can easily make a person ignorant to the truth. In Gilded Six-Bits, Sweat, and Spunk, Zora Neale Hurston uses hubris to sculpt characters that eventually ruin themselves. These short stories challenge the typical view of the south during this time period by stepping away from racial conflict and instead focusing on the problems between the characters. She does this by almost making fear and deceit characters themselves and adding symbols that create lasting powerful messages. Hurston uses pride and arrogance in all three works to develop the characters, ultimately creating conflicts that center around betrayal, gender roles, and power.…

“Power is dangerous, it attracts the worst and corrupts the best” Edward Abbey once said on how addictive power can be. In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, Shakespeare demonstrates how the lust for power can make anyone lose their identity in order to achieve power. Because of the desire for power, people will betray anyone in their way, even if they’re close. They disregard their conscience, which leads to immense guilt, thus a part of their humanity is stripped away. In addition, power makes people greedy.…
