1 Simon de bolivar was one of the military leaders of the Venezuelan army and was instrumental in the revolution against the Spanish empire. In 1819, he wrote the Message to the congress of Aeruginosa to the government of Spain, which expresses the Argentinian peoples need for independence. To create unity and inspire the Argentinian people, Simon utilized many of the enlightenment ideas that stemmed from the French revolution. These ideas consisted of equality among all people, separation and removal of a monarchical government, and the creation of a republic. These ideas allowed for him and the Venezuelan people to overthrow the oppressive Spanish government and create an independent state.

Since cotton required large amounts of land to grow on, a nation had to be totally committed to its production to make any profit. Because South-Eastern America had large amounts of unsettled land, it made it the perfect place to grow cotton. This allowed cotton to become prevalent in these areas. Originally, the cotton was grown on small farms which eventually expanded into large plantations. Eventually, land was running out and expansion was needed to keep up with demand. This resulted in native Americans to be pushed out of their land and moved further west or killed and the land taken. Also, forests were cleared to make room for more cotton fields and small cotton farms were bought out to accommodate the plantation’s demand for cotton. In his book, Becker stated that “planters in Louisiana might decide to purchase fresh cotton lands, and slave traders might find it profitable to move young slaves by the thousands into these new territories” (201). After the demand for more land was satisfied, there was a new demand for labor to work the newly acquired land. During this time of mass production, war capitalism, “relied on the capacity of the right and powerful Europeans to divide the world into an “inside” and “outside” (38). The outside was branded by the expropriation of territories, imperial domination, theft of resources, enslavement of people, discrimination, and domination of land by private capitalists with little oversight by the European state (38). This allows cotton to be produced at a cheaper price, ultimately bringing these private owners more wealth and influence.
