It involves learning the values, knowledge and skills that enable people to communicate with others effectively and to contribute in positive ways. Social skills are the skills we use to connect and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures and body language. Throughout the movie, Simon Birch displays numerous actions of social development. He demonstrates one of the seven types of smart, people smart, when helping a little boy at the Christmas concert. When the young boy was nervous about going on the church retreat, Simon helped motivate him by telling him that he had nothing to worry about. Furthermore, when the bus crashed into the quarry, Simon exhibited tremendous leadership skills. He understood how to control the situation directed all the children, whilst saving everyone's lives. Physical development refers to one's body image and their healthy lifestyle practices. It involves learning how to use our bodies and physical skills to develop control over our actions. Simon displays word intelligence by quoting scriptures from the bible, a very difficult task to do. Emotional development is concerned with our feelings and related actions. Becoming aware and controlling our feelings and how we can react to our emotions in a given situation, contributes to our emotional development. The difference between positive and negative feelings towards any given situation may be due to emotional development. Recognizing and labeling our emotions can help us to take more control over ourselves. Simon conveys all seven emotions at one point or another during the movie.
