Abstract
We have seen that music can play a crucial role in recall of information. We are going to conduct an experiment that involves participants that will be in the presence or absence of music while playing the game Simon, a simple game testing short term memory. We will have the participants play the game in three different musical settings or play in silence and determine if the conditions they are in help their performance. Based on the research we have done, we can expect that in general the participants will perform better at Simon with music present rather than when the music …show more content…
The experiment used students from Izmir Dokuz Eylul University, Buca Faculty of Education, and the department of Elementary Mathematics Teaching. In the experiment they used different genres of music: Pop, Soft Rock, Nature, and Classical music to view the effects of all music on math test scores. The experimenters also viewed the differences between males and females. The study concluded that “in general, music increased the exam scores of male and female students” (p. 5); Additionally women had higher scores than …show more content…

Participants will be taking a post test instead of a pretest so that they will not be predisposed to what the study is about. The form will have two questions so not too many variables are being looked at, but just enough to see if there are any underlying variables. The first question will ask if they have any previous conditions that made them feel they performed poorly while playing simon. For Example ADD,ADHD, head injuries, alzheimer 's, dementia, short-term memory loss, etc. We have decided to ask this to make sure that our sample size is not swayed by another condition since we are looking for the average person with no memory problems. If a participant answers yes to this question we will not include their results in our study. Secondly we will have each participant rate the music they listened to, if applicable. The rating scale is either, enjoyable, somewhat enjoyable, neither distracting or enjoyable, somewhat distracting, distracting. We added this question to see if whether or not they liked the music
