Simmel explains that economics and exchange are the number one scenario (according to him) in which humans sacrifice. He goes on to state that exchange can only exist if one man loses something he possessed and gains something which he did not possess. Thus, he must make a sacrifice (the object which he possessed) in order to acquire what he desires. For Simmel, economic exchange “always signifies the sacrifice of an otherwise useful good, however much eudaemonistic gain is involved” (p.87). It can be induced from his statement that he believes sacrifice to have a key role in exchange, regardless of the moralities attached to the exchange or the happiness one may gain from the exchange.
