Jonathan explain how his father was from Oklahoma and his mother from Sonora, Mexico which informs us that he came from two backgrounds. This is the reason why I was able to relate this to Jonathan because he came from two different backgrounds. As for Yvette she mentions that her education and hard work was essential to make a progress in her life. Hanson (2011) explains how generations of African Americans have held strong beliefs of education and hard work to overcome barriers. This related to Yvette because thanks to her education and hard work she was able to overcome the barriers to continue living in the small city, Lenare. Due to her education and hard work she was able to have a productive live. Both Yvette and Jonathan explain how they felt about racism. They did not agree with being discriminated. “Numerous studies document the presence and impact of racism in the U.S” (Hanson, 2011, p.168). I was able to relate this to both Jonathan and Yvette because they did not agree with racism which still affects them today. Overall having Yvette and Jonathan as our guest speaker has made me realize that African Americans can come from different background like Jonathan did. This will help me in my career and life so that I will not make assumptions about other like I would have before. Just like education and hard work change Yvette life I hope it will also change mine. I am also focusing on my education and have always worked hard to get to where I am today. As well as Yvette I hope to overcome my barriers I have to someday get out the small city,
